The Perfect Trend To Follow

The Perfect Trend To Follow

At the start of every season, the fashion experts on TV and in magazines tell us what the “must haves” are for us to add to our closets. Perhaps it is a white shirt, black dress, tan trench coat, and animal print shoes or belt.

Oh, wait! Isn’t that what seems to be recommended to women practically every year, even though tan is a very unflattering color on many women, including myself?

Black is harsh on some others, and white can make some people’s skin tone look ghostly. Spellcheck may have changed ghastly to ghostly, but there isn’t much of a difference, right?

These experts typically represent a manufacturer or retailer and are there to encourage shopping. Trend purchases are often behind many of those price tags I see hanging in women’s closets on unworn purchases.

Actually, there are a few women who can pull off almost any look, but that is their personal style, and they typically work in the fashion field. These women would never be labeled a fashion victim as they are all about being on-trend and are in the business of doing so.

But if you are an entrepreneur, executive, stay-at-home mom, lawyer, speaker, writer, decorator, artist, volunteer, fundraiser, etc., you want your unique talents, personality, creativity, and self-confidence to shine, not the metallic top the fashion stylist on TV claimed you simply MUST wear.

No, you do not have to wear or buy the latest trend to look current or fashionable. Not following the current fad is a style in itself and one that I employ.

This does not mean dressing like you did 20 years ago, even though you may be lucky enough to still fit in your closet’s archives. Nor does dressing to be stylish and in style mean wearing crop tops or thigh-high boots, just because they are the ‘must haves ‘ of the season.

Even worse, is how much older we can look when wearing an outfit based on the hottest trend, instead of what works best for her body, age, and lifestyle.

Remember those low-cut pants that caused men, small children, and us ladies to gasp when the wearer bent over? At least with a plumber, it is worth the offense as we want our leaky faucet fixed, but it’s not so endearing when a woman bends down so we can see the manufacturer label of her underwear…or more! 😬

STYLING TIP – The key to looking stylish and confident isn’t about following trends—it’s about wearing what truly flatters you and makes you feel great. Your style should reflect your unique personality and lifestyle, not someone else’s idea of what’s in vogue.

And then she said:
“I used to feel frumpy and never knew what to wear, but now, when I wear the clothes Scarlett found for me, I feel confident, sexy, and, as per my friends, ”cute!” Now, I look forward to getting dressed in the morning!” – J.E

Two Women, One Great Dress!

Two Women, One Great Dress!
Seeing Double?

Two Women, One Great Dress!

Yes, you are seeing double, and here’s why.

I share a love for fashion exhibits with my long-time and amazing client, artist, and business coach, Jane Pollak. A few months ago, we made plans to meet at The Met in NYC and admire their latest exhibit.

Much to our delighted surprise, we wore the same dress.

So how did this happen you ask?

A few years ago, I recommended this teal Eileen Fisher dress you see above, to two clients for its versatility, comfort, and easy-peasy style.
EF keeps designing this dress in other colors because so much can be done with it, which gets me back to your seeing double.

After recommending this dress and seeing how great my clients looked in it, I had to get one myself, but it didn’t dawn on me to tell Jane I’d be wearing it for our museum day.

It turns out it didn’t matter because I styled the dress for Jane in at least five different ways, one of which was as in the above photo.

This dress can be styled classic, bohemian, sporty, romantic, and more, depending on your personality, lifestyle, and what looks best for your shape and features.

It can also be worn with a long-sleeved jacket or sweater and boots. Its versatility is endless.

Versatility is the key to having a closet filled with clothes you’ll love, more money in your bank, and not wasted on clothes you rarely, if ever, wear.

PS: The dress is now on sale in Tan and Fuchsia! The black is even more versatile, but not on sale.

Have Your Contents Shifted?

Have Your Contents Shifted?

Have you ever heard a flight attendant ask the passengers to be cautious when opening the overhead compartments, as the contents may have shifted during the flight?

When I heard this on one of my trips to work with a client in another state, I immediately knew that this was the best way to explain how one day when I was around 40, I went to bed thinking I was looking good in my clothes and I was content with my body.

The next morning, I seemed to have awakened with rolls, bumps, and bubbles that I swear were not there the night before. How come the jeans and T-shirt I successfully wore the day before now made me look old and out of shape? What happened?

Ladies, I am sorry to report that no matter how hard you exercise or how well you eat, your contents will shift while we fly through our lives.
Deep breaths -this is not a reason to grab an oxygen mask because you may now be hyperventilating.

It just means that a few changes are needed to accommodate the ‘shift’. If rolls are obvious, wear clothes that disguise and cover them up.If the shirt and pants you beautifully wore before now expose ruffles and ridges in your waist and or thighs, then get them out of your closet and replace them with clothes that smoothly lay over the troublesome spots instead of clinging to them for dear life.

NOTE: Exclusive Club ALERT!!!Some of the best-dressed women I work with are a size 12 +. You deserve to look great, too! Click Book A Call to join the club.

Size Matters When Choosing What To Wear

Size Doesn’t Matter

Ever find yourself in your bedroom or a dressing room determined to get into a pair of pants no matter how long it may take to get them on? If the label is showing a size that you have worn before, surely it will fit again because darn it, your will power is way bigger than your thighs, right?

WRONG.

In the case of finding clothes that fit and flatter, size doesn’t and shouldn’t matter.

Way too often a woman beats herself up because the size she used to wear or wants to be in is no longer an option. Rather than once again vowing you won’t eat much that day or actually use your gym membership, try not to focus on the size label, but instead, concentrate on how your clothes fit the body you have.

I am not trying to discourage women from healthy diets and exercise, but if it has been a while since you swore you would lose that post-baby fat or the extra weight you gained attending college, and you are close to attending your own child’s college graduation, isn’t it time to let go of the smaller size label and focus instead on properly fitting into the size you are now?

Imagine a man going into a store looking for a new pair of pants and discovering that the 34 waist he typically wears is a bit snug. He doesn’t storm out irritated or squeeze into the too-tight pants barely able to walk. Rather the angel of men’s clothing departments, also known as the tailor, descends upon him and his salesperson with his magic tape measure and turns the next size up into the perfect fitting pair of pants.

Ladies, you too can have your fit angel, except you have to seek him or her out in better stores or in your neighborhood. If the size 10 pants, top or dress is snug in some spots go up one size, and have a tailor take in the loose-fitting areas. Then you’ll have clothes that fit like they were made just for you.

Keep in mind that nobody gets a compliment based on the size printed on his or her clothing. Compliments and comfort occur from how great your clothes fit when tailored to your curves. You must know that being a size six does not equal happiness or success. but having clothes that fit leads to confidence and possibilities beyond your wildest dreams.

I have size 18 clients who are far better dressed than the Twenty-Somethings around them because they stopped waiting to lose weight before investing in properly fitting and flattering clothes.

Alert: Try not to have a distaste for the larger size labels. One of my clients once did. She so hated seeing what size she wore that she had cut out the size tag of EVERY single piece of clothing she owned so that when I got to her home, she had no idea what size she or any of her clothes were. What was also interesting is that she disliked almost all of her clothes and had not gone shopping for new ones for years. Despite a closet full of tagless pieces, she complained so much about never having anything to wear that her husband hired me to end her stress and her turning down invitations to go out.

After I showed her what clothes would look great on her and that size wasn’t what was causing her fear of figuring out what to wear. It was not knowing which style, color, and size of clothes were perfect for her. This was a very easy decision to make.

What size to select for her to try on was no longer the problem, but do yourself a favor, and think of size tags the same as those tags on mattresses with the warning label; Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law.

Change Is Good!

Change Is Good!

This Fortune Cookie Had It Right!

Sometimes a message can come in the most unexpected places.

Here’s an email from one of my wonderful clients that I had to share.

It’s a clothes-shopping tip that will save you money and stress.

“Tonight I got a great Chinese saying from a fortune cookie and thought of you. You tell us that women feel they have ‘nothing to wear’ so they go out to the same stores and buy more of the same thing. So here’s the proverb: ‘If you don’t enjoy what you have, how could you be happier with more?’ I thought it was perfect!” – Chris L.

Remember it isn’t you that has to change.
You need to change the clothes you buy.
Please stop buying more of the same.

Change the way you shop, not yourself.

Tips For Choosing The Best Neckline

Tips For Choosing The Best Neckline

Are You A V Or Round Neck?

Tips For Choosing The Best Neckline

The shape of your face is either complimented or somewhat insulted by the neckline you choose to wear.
I bet you heard that a V-neckline is universally flattering. I’m sorry to tell you, that no, a V-neckline is not flattering for every woman. Yes, it can make the neck look longer, and seemingly elongate your body, yet a V-neckline may not be right for you.

For instance, if you have a long face, then wear rounder necklines, to balance out your facial proportions.
A V-neck will make you feel and look like Big Bird if you have a very long neck. Wear a softer and rounder neckline, and you will look as graceful as a ballerina.

I once had a client who was so upset about her double chin, that she strongly considered getting cosmetic surgery to even out her proportions. She only saw her jawline as the trouble spot and was focused on it each time she looked at her reflection.

That was, until I showed her, in less than 30 seconds, how to visually reduce the appearance of her chin area, simply by changing her neckline. I gave her a V-neck top to put on, instead of a round neck, which by the way was practically all she had, and her mouth opened wide in amazement.

Her double chin seemed to have disappeared, as well as those lines that form around our necks as we age that resemble the rings in a tree stump. Lovely visual isn’t it?

The V-neck diminished her chin issue because her neckline was no longer drawing attention to the roundness of her face. This is a simple, quick, and inexpensive solution to stop you from pulling back the skin around your chin when you check yourself out in the mirror, and don’t deny that you do that.

Note: My clients learn which of the many available necklines and proportions are right for them, but if you follow the above advice you will be off to a good start on whether a v or round neck is best for you.

Bathing Suit Shopping Tips

Bathing Suit Shopping Tips for
Battling the Bathing Suit Blues

The lazy, hazy days of summer are here, and nothing beats cooling off by dipping into the water or lying on the float.

All you need to do is pour yourself a cool drink and put on a bathing suit.

😬😱😬😱😬😱😬😱😬😱😬😱😬😱😬😱😱😬😱😱😬😱

Cue the music for “Jaws” when the young woman is swimming in the ocean, as the thought of finding and wearing a bathing suit may cause equal amounts of dread and fear, as well as some blood-curdling screams.

Finding a flattering bathing suit isn’t easy, but when you use my tips to get you back in the water, or at least be able to lie down on a lounge chair, you’ll find the process a bit less stressful.

Do not try on suits that are the same size as your clothes. Don’t ask me why, but swimwear sizes do not correspond with clothing sizes. Women need to try one to two sizes up for a flattering and comfortable fit.

Choose a suit in a color that compliments you. And FYI: Avoid white, especially if you plan on getting wet. White suits will always become see-through. 😳

Highlight your smaller parts with lighter colors and camouflage your somewhat larger parts with darker colors. I use this trick to minimize what I consume at the all-you-can-eat buffet tables and the few too many Pina Coladas.

Watch your back. Take a look and see if your back is billowing over the edge of your bathing suit. If it is, then go for a style that has a higher back so more of you is held in.

Of course you wish you had a smaller waistline, so look for suits that have shirring at the middle. The fabric gathering is a great way to disguise muffin tops and tummy poufs.

Tuck, lift and suck. Tuck, lift and suck. Repeat this mantra each time you put on your suit. Tuck in your breasts, lift up your rear so it is in the bathing suit versus hanging out around the edges, and suck in your stomach when you walk to or get up from your lounge chair.

Never underestimate or abuse the power of the cover-up. A simple lightweight tank dress or oversized shirt is far more flattering than shorts and a t-shirt and fits so well with pool or beach surroundings.

An Afterthought: If the mere idea of wearing a bathing suit still causes you flashes of terror, I have heard Alaska is a lovely place to visit.
