Gayle King Look At These Styling Tweaks

Please, Gayle King, Give Me A Chance!

Some people have a bucket list of places to go or things to do.

I have a few places I’d love to travel to but that rarely crosses my mind, but I do have one item on my work bucket list that still hasn’t been checked off.

I want to create outfits for Gayle King using her clothes and accessories. She loves bright colors and occasionally overdoes it.  Often she makes fun of herself and outfits on Instagram.

Gayle King

I’ve often been encouraged to find a way to make my dream come true.

Maybe one day it will, but meanwhile, let me show you how I would change her very
colorful with stripes gone wild outfit as shown below.

Gayle King

Here is why this top or dress is not as good as it could be for Gayle King.

  1. The stripes go across from arm to arm, which makes her look wider than she is.
  2. The stripes go right across her chest, which might cause her to say: “eyes up here please!”
  3. The neckline is too low for her proportions.
  4. There simply is too much pattern here and is very distracting. This isn’t a good thing as she’s reporting the news.
  5. The position of the stripes is making her shoulders look very narrow and small which makes her middle appear wider.
  6. All of the above takes away from her incredible talent as a journalist and distracts the viewer.
  7. I’d suggest different glasses as there is way too much going on here.

I tried to use my iPad to show how she could still wear her beloved colors but in a bit more of a subdued and flattering way. I don’t have fancy computer programs, so, please be kind to me.

Gayle King

  1. I removed the stripes from her arms, and she now looks thinner.
  2. I removed the stripes across her chest, which also make her look thinner.
  3. I made her neckline higher and solid, which also makes her look thinner.
  4. I removed most of the stripes, which makes her look a bit more serious.
  5. By making her shoulders in a solid color, notice how her shoulders look broader. Guess what that does? Yup, makes her waist appear smaller so she looks thinner.
  6. She still is showing her love of colors and whimsy, but now is wearing the top instead of it wearing her.
  7. I played around with her glasses for fun, but if I were to create outfits for her she’d love to wear, I’d add colorful glasses with solids, not stripes.

Small tweaks make a huge difference towards looking thinner, younger, stylish, and more professional. They also are what make an outfit go from meh to marvelous.

When Your Clothes Don’t Fit

When Your Clothes Don't Fit
When Your Clothes Don’t Fit

Fourteen years ago, I enrolled in an expensive and in-depth Image Consulting course at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

I had been encouraged to start my own personal wardrobe styling business, but I wanted to know more than others in my field and have more invaluable tips to give to my clients.

At the time my son was still in his early years of having intractable epilepsy, and after a failed brain surgery we were now trying the very strict Ketogenic Diet. It required me to measure every morsel and plan every meal in advance.

The main focus of my life at that time was to help him have fewer seizures and save him from even more brain damage.

It was consuming, depressing, and exhausting. So I guess it shouldn’t have come as a surprise when I put my outfit on for the first day of class and couldn’t even close my pants. 😳

While being so focused on my son and also trying to keep things ‘normal’ for my daughter and husband, I was rarely working out and eating more than I should have.

The bottom line: I wasn’t paying attention to myself and it showed. Actually, it showed on my stomach, hips, thighs, and even my face.

I dramatically changed what I was eating, but never starved myself, and by day 4 of classes my clothes were already fitting better.  I was able to wear the outfits I had pre-planned while using a few of my tricks to disguise any extra wiggle in my middle.

I was miserable when I couldn’t close my pants and had to use a rubber band to wear them, yet I learned a lot from that experience.

1. Don’t assume your clothes will still fit a body that isn’t what it was when you bought them.

2. Just because you are not as thin as you used to be doesn’t mean you can’t have outfits that make you look younger and thinner, along with the best accessory of all – confidence.

3. Making a small tweak in what I was eating allowed me to quickly lose a small amount of weight, which made a big difference in how my clothes fit me and how healthy I felt.

I don’t want you to rubber band your way thru the clothes in your closet and health, and that’s why you should…

Why You Have Nothing To Wear

Why You Have Nothing To Wear

Recently a new client asked to work with me because she was fed up with having lots of clothes, yet nothing she loved to wear.

Every time she was getting dressed for either an in-person or remote meeting she would wear the same one or two outfits that she had in a few different colors, but always felt frumpy.

And she couldn’t understand why the clothes she had bought seemed great when she bought them, and not so great when she tried to make an outfit with them.

She hysterically shared that her recent way of accessorizing an outfit was to put a bra on. LOL

Then she confessed that things got worse when she let her 18-year-old daughter give her styling advice. 😳

Hence, her “I can’t take it anymore” ringy -dingy to my cell.

I virtually took a look at her clothes and a few selfies so I could see what was going wrong and how to make it right. And it worked.

I told her, here’s why you have nothing to wear…

Turns out she was buying clothes just because they fit, instead of loving how she looked in them and following the advice of a teenager might have worked if she was 18, but not at over 45.

She had lots of pieces, but very few that could be mix and matched to create lots of new outfits.

During her Zoom with me, I was able to show her which of her clothes were perfect for her and which to get out of her closet. And because she chose my Premium Virtual Styling service, I showed her the clothes and accessories to try and buy because I knew she’d look amazing wearing them.

Yesterday she emailed me a big thank you. She loves all the compliments she’s now getting when on camera, and finally her insecurities are gone. She also stopped buying clothes she didn’t even like to wear.

PS Now she’s giving her daughter styling advice and she’s listening!!  Respect!

Sometimes hearing it from someone else is best.

Esther Blum is an Integrative Dietitian and has this story to share with you.

One of the biggest struggles I hear from clients is, “I hate walking into my closet because nothing I have looks good on me!”

Ohhhh how I relate to THAT!

In my twenties when I was working out like crazy and really limiting my calories, I bought a stunning navy pinstripe suit that was a size 4 and made me feel powerful and strong.

I also went to Loehmann’s and invested in a couple of other stunning suits. I felt amazing and so proud of my body.

Trouble was, I got wickedly sick with mercury toxicity and my thyroid completely conked out. I gained 20 pounds in 3 months and all of a sudden nothing I had fit me anymore. No more suits, no more petite me…and definitely nothing else that fit!

I didn’t recognize my body and didn’t know how to dress for my new shape. I cried all the time and Iost all my confidence because I had so much shame about how I looked.

So eventually, I bought some new clothes with the help of a stylist and took ownership over my new shape. I learned the best colors and cuts to wear that made me feel like me…only an upgraded version 🤗.

And this is exactly what I help my clients do–feel good in their skin and rock out where they are while they’re in the process of reaching their goals.

How To Get Their Attention OnLine

How To Get Their Attention OnLine
How To Get Their Attention OnLine

Sometimes going online is the only way to get an outcome you not only desire but also need.

A few months ago a client asked me to help her find a dress to wear to her son’s wedding reception in the fall.

I sent her links to a few dresses I felt she’d look great in plus one dressy 2 piece pants outfit. She didn’t ask for pants, but I felt she would look spectacular in this particular outfit.

Some of the dresses were lovely on her, but she LOVED how the pants outfit looked on her and the photos she sent me of her wearing it showed how stunning she looked and felt.

Note: She would never have picked the winning outfit on her own.

She mailed back the dresses as she didn’t need them, and…

Done.

Unfortunately, the pants set was damaged as the box that it was shipped in took quite a beating,

Not done.

The easy solution was to order another one and send back the damaged one.

Done.

A few months went by, and she still hadn’t gotten credit for the damaged set she had returned.

Not done.

She reached out to me to ask for advice as her emails and telephone calls were not getting her the refund that was due to her.

I told her to go their FaceBook page and very nicely explain the problem, and wouldn’t you know it, she got a response and refund in less than 24 hours and now it’s Done!

What are you saying?

Now if you’re working and being seen online, I want you not to look like everyone else.

If you dress too casually, simply, or unimaginatively, you’re showing your existing and prospective clients how you see your business or GASP, them!!!!

Watch below to see what I feel so strongly about and how to get their
attention online in a good way.

Let’s talk about how we can make you not disappear and lose clients.

What Does Working Virtually Mean?

Say what????

Everyone in your meeting sees how you show up.
I’m watching you & am here to help.

Some people told me- “Your business must not be doing well these days.”

I replied – Umm, actually the opposite is true because I’ve been working virtually for years.
No ‘pivot’ was needed.

March wasn’t pretty for anyone.

In mid-March 2020, I was glued to the TV in my bathrobe pretty much all day and night.  However before the month was over I got dressed every morning, put on makeup pretty much every day, and went back to doing what I do best – helping women always know what to wear.
Yes, even during a pandemic.

What you wear even when you rarely leave the house matters. It matters a lot.

Wearing t-shirts and PJ bottoms with beds or kitchens in the background while being on Zoom or Skype doesn’t scream out authority, talent, ability, or confidence. And turning off your camera says either you don’t care enough to show up or worse, you don’t have confidence in yourself.

It isn’t the way to get new and better clients.

It isn’t a way to make more money.

It certainly isn’t the way to improve your mood or waistline. 😬

The way you show up on a Zoom meeting depicts how you show up
to your clients and management.

What Does Working Virtually Mean?
Everyone in your meeting sees how you show up.

The business world rapidly got a lot more competitive, and for the women who wanted to grow their business and self-esteem they had the below to help them succeed.

Here are the ways I’ve been working virtually 100%.

I first offered on-line personal shopping to my existing clients 6 years ago.

About 5 1/2 years ago I added virtual personal styling with or without online shopping.

4 years ago a client urged me to create  Scarlett On Call which is only for the women who’ve already worked with me.

3 years ago I created a great online video course called Dress Without Stress.

I had four sold-out Virtual Styling Workshops.

Executive team leaders hired me to show their teams how to look and feel their best, which I call getting Zoom-a-fied, so they look as professional in a virtual meeting as they previously did in person.

I virtually helped one client pack for a 2-week city and country trip.

Another client asked me to help her decide which clothes to take with her on her move from one state and lifestyle to another. Why move what you won’t need or wear?

Others wanted what to wear, makeup, lighting, and background tips for looking great on Zoom.

I created a new 4-month program called Clothes The Deal that includes all of the above, but I haven’t made it public yet.

I’m here to help you too.

Pick a time HERE for you to have a 20-minute free Stop Stressing About Dressing call with me, and I’ll help you identify one of the reasons you struggle to figure out what to wear, and out to fix it.

Results

“Thank you for helping settle me down. Lots of upheavals, but grounding to know what to wear.”  – Jane Pollak

“Scarlett gave me makeup tips, we put together Zoom-ready outfits and she picked the best virtual background along with lighting and other suggestions. It was fun and so helpful.
Later that day I was in a Zoom meeting and one of the attendees said that I looked great and they loved the virtual background. Since then I’ve received many additional compliments.” – Christina Larson

“I hired Scarlett because I wanted to figure out a style that would work for me – casual yet professional. She met or exceeded my expectations by having a ton of options ready to go when I arrived, tirelessly chasing down different sizes, and frankly nailing combinations that would work for me right from the get-go. My favorite part was how effortless the whole process was – and how good and comfortable I feel in the resulting outfits. I call Scarlett an absolute expert in her field – and overall a miracle worker!”  – Hanah Brooks

“I am writing this email to let you know the effects of your presence are long-lasting. Several times this week I have consulted the photo album of different styles you created for me and I have thanked you often… for making my life so easy, in knowing what to wear, and to be able to “dress without the stress”.  It was well worth it, and a very wise investment.  Thank you, again for doing what you do!” – Sandra Sergeant

How You Dress Will Keep You From Feeling Like This Too

How you dress
How you dress changes your business and life.

“I don’t want to look like a Shlump!”

That’s what not 1, or 2, but 3 women have told me in just the last two weeks. After 3 plus months of quarantine, they have gotten a bit too relaxed and see that their laid back personal image is causing their business and psyche to suffer.

Think about it…Nobody wants to work with me if I show up dressed like a “shlump” either on-line or in person. Nobody!

Nobody wants to hire a life or business coach if they’re dressed like a gardener because that won’t convince you they can help grow your life and business.

Nobody wants to hire a financial advisor if they’re wearing outdated or ill-fitting clothes and look like they’re short on cash.

Get my drift? How you dress will either help or hurt you.

So … if you’re ready to take the next leap in your business (but your wardrobe isn’t exactly screaming authority) lets chat and we can get started on a style that matches your talent.

How You Dress

“Scarlett is a brilliant Image Stylist. She understands not only what looks good on her clients but how those clothes interact with daily life and can be an extension of your brand. What she saved me in knowing where to find the great sales (and when to pay full price) covered her fee alone. Even if that wasn’t the case she would be worth every penny. I highly recommend Scarlett!” – Patty Lennon

How You Dress

“I finally committed to investing in myself, as I just wanted to stop feeling stuck or blah about what I was wearing. I was simply tired of feeling like I didn’t have the “right” things to wear. Scarlett helped me get rid of the clothes that were not serving me well and created a closet full of outfits I could wear. It was also really helpful to learn the key pieces that were missing from my wardrobe and how to best use my accessories.” – Nancy Sheed
