What To Wear When Working From Home

What to wear when working from home

Are You Dressed From The Waist Down?

Don’t worry, I’m not trying to be nosy, but…did you wonder why Robert Kelly didn’t get up to usher his adorable children out of his office, while being interviewed live on the BBC?

If you missed it, you simply must watch this video and if you already saw it, go ahead and view it again, as we could always use laughter to brighten up our days.

AND, you’ll really love the what if this was a woman being interviewed  version at the bottom of this post.

So, why didn’t he get up? Well according to the very funny Stephen Colbert, host of the Late Show the answer is obvious…he wasn’t wearing pants.

I mean come on, he’s working from home, so why bother?

Ok, I think all of us who work from home need to get dressed, especially if we do Skype, Zoom, Video Conferencing, FaceTime or any other platform that allows you to be seen and heard.

One should always be prepared for children, pets, or horrors,  unwanted pests that crawl up our arms and cause jumping out of the chair and uncontrolled screaming. Or when the doorbell rings and you have an unexpected visitor during your office hours.

So, imagine you brushed your hair, put on your mascara, lipstick, and lovely top. From the waist up, you’re good. On the bottom, perhaps you are wearing gym leggings, and you didn’t even go to the gym, or sweatpants. Now let’s say you have to suddenly get up…not a pretty picture, is it?

Besides being half dressed can be a problem if you need to get up and out of your home office, it also isn’t that good for your confidence and self esteem.

Studies do show that making the effort to get dressed and not stay in pjs or gym clothes, allows for more productive days for the work from home professional.

So, what to wear when working from home? Take a look below.

Here are a few outfit ideas for you to wear when working from home. They are simple to put together, attractive, comfortable and ready for being seen on screen or out the door walking the dog or running errands in between calls.

  • Jean or black leggings that in no way resemble what you would wear to the gym. Not regular jeans, which can be uncomfortable for some.
  • Long tops, such as a tunic style top. The goal is to cover the tummy & tush with loose tops.
  • Throw on boots, flats, fun sneakers or sandals depending upon the weather.
  • Tie one on…shame on you, I meant a scarf, which will give instant oomph to your comfy outfit.

Here are a few photos for inspiration.

How To Make Wearing Heels Hurt Less

How To Make Wearing Heels Hurt Less

How To Make Wearing Heels Hurt Less

Please tell me how to make wearing heels hurt less.

I keep hearing this plea, over and over again…in my own head and of course, from my clients all the time.

And, if you know me, you know I am always giving and looking for answers.

So when I saw an ad for an insert to help relieve the pain of wearing heels, cause sometimes I just want to wear 2 to 3 inch heels, but without discomfort, I bought  inserts made by Vivian Lou.

They shift the pitch and position of my feet without making the shoes feel tighter, which is an issue with the many cushiony inserts that never worked for me.

Give them a try if you also want relief, and take a look at the below advice Vivian Lou gave in a recent blog post. It’s so good, that I asked for permission to share their tips with you so you have some more ideas on how to make wearing heels hurt less.

A study conducted by The College of Podiatry revealed that it takes an average of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 48 seconds for high heel wearers to start feeling foot pain.

And one in five women (20%) say they start feeling pain within just 10 minutes.

That’s crazy!

High heels are beautiful, inspiring, confidence-building, outfit-making, and a must-have for any fashionable woman.

But wearing them for 10 minutes or even 1 hour before the pain sets in is just awful.

So what are women to do?

:: Strengthen and stretch feet.
One of the best ways to prevent high heel pain is to strengthen and stretch the more than 100 tendons, ligaments and muscles located in our feet and toes. Here are a few simple exercises to help prevent high heel pain.

:: Regularly measure feet.
According to a study conducted by the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, 88% of women routinely wear shoes that are too small.

:: Find an ideal heel height.
Some women are most comfortable in kitten heels or low wedges, while others feel right at home in 4 inch heels. But why? Dr. Emma Supple, a London podiatrist, says it’s all in the structure and flexibility of your foot. When relaxed, the foot has a natural incline. This is the position in which the foot feels most comfortable.  It is also your ideal heel height according to Dr. Supple. Learn more here.

:: Soak sore feet.
After a long day in heels, a quick foot soak is a great way to soothe overworked feet. You can try a variety of soaks, including those with cayenne peppertonic water, or essential oils.

How Can A Woman Find Clothes That Fit?

Find Clothes That FitBet you often ask yourself:  Why Is It So Hard To Find Clothes That Fit?

Good news, it’s not you. It’s them…well, it’s the designers that make it hard for women to find clothes that fit.

Most clothing is designed and manufactured for the narrow rectangular body shape and from my many years of experience showing women how to find clothes that fit, most are NOT shaped like thin rectangles. Me neither.

Most woman actually have curves, and often our curves have curves, so here is the one thing you can do to make the clothes in the stores fit a real woman’s shape and not the mannequins.

Get the clothes altered either by the store’s in house, or your neighborhood tailor.

I recently found a gown for a new client who told me she was never able to find anything in the stores to fit her body.

Find Clothes That FitIf you know me, I LOVE a challenge.

The event she was going to is world famous, and year after year she felt not as elegant as all the other women, who typically are tall, thin, and styled in custom gowns.

Ha I said. No really, I said ha…to myself.

So two weeks before she would get on the plane to fly to California, I took her shopping and found a gown for her that is stunning, and I mean stunning on her.

It needed shortening and taking in at the shoulders for a perfect fit.

If she wasn’t willing to get the dress altered, she wouldn’t look as award winning as she does. I really wish I could share with you a photo of her in that gown, but I need to respect the privacy of my clients. But, I really wish I could.

So, because she used a tailor I can proudly say,  the Oscar goes to…..

Stop avoiding using a tailor & you’ll be a winner too.

And then she said:

“I don’t like clothes shopping, I probably never will. But, I like to look nice and wear flattering clothing. Shopping with you was a great experience. I now have a real wardrobe with many options. You gave me an honest assessment of the clothes I tried on and made sure they all fit properly on my far-less-than-perfect figure. I am looking forward to wearing the clothes you found for me.” B. C. Westchester N.Y.

Should You Buy Ivanka Trump’s Brand?

Should You Buy Ivanka Trump's Brand?
Should You Buy Ivanka Trump’s Brand?

Now That Nordstrom Dropped the Ivanka Trump Line, and a few more retailers are joining the migration, many of her fans are wondering what is going on and where will they be able to get her merchandise.

So, should you buy Ivanka Trump’s brand? To be very honest with you, I was never a fan of her line. I found the fit was not flattering for most body types and the quality was poor.

Years ago I bought a pair of her shoes because they looked so good, but after wearing them for one night and losing all feeling in my feet as they hurt so much, I realized my feet were not meant for her shoes, no matter how cute they looked.

When a line of clothes or accessories gets bad reviews and the quality is not that great, people stop buying it.

It happens to be very common for retailers to drop lines from their stores, and Ivanka Trump isn’t the first and definitely will not be the last.

I got Should You Buy Ivanka Trump's Brand?the following stats from International Business Times website.

“Citing internal Nordstrom data, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday that sales of Ivanka Trump’s fashion line dropped by about 32 percent last fiscal year. Sales of Ivanka’s footwear and apparel fell more than 70 percent lower in the second, third and fourth weeks of October 2016 compared with the same time the year before.”

But, if you loved how her line fits you and the feeling it evokes when you wear it, have no fear as many stores such as Bloomingdale’s, Amazon, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s and Zappos still carry Ivanka Trump products.

If her sales keep slipping, it won’t be long till more retailers go from having Trumps products go from available for sale, to on sale, to no longer available for sale.

That’s business, not politics.

There are many lines out there that offer style, comfort, flattering fit and high quality. I tell my clients about them all the time.

Are you A Gladiator?

Are you A Gladiator?

Are you A Gladiator? Well, I am here to say that I am a loud and proud Gladiator, which is what fans of the TV show Scandal are called.

If you love the show, you know why we’re called Gladiators.

So why am I telling you this?

Well, this all stems from an OMG, I love Scandal too conversation I was recently having with a fellow entrepreneur, and then she said something that made my Wardrobe Stylist ears perk up big time.

“My style is like Kerry Washington’s character Olivia Pope, but I can’t dress like her”.

Oh really?
I say, au contraire.

So I respond with, what about Viola Davis who stars in How To Get Away With Murder?”

After all, her character, Annalise Keating, also has a drop dead, pun intended, gorgeous wardrobe.

Are you A Gladiator

Despite both actresses being different in age, size, coloring and features, each have incredible wardrobes and truly enviable outerwear.

Not sure if it is ever hot in How To Get Away With Murder or on Scandal.

Shame on you,

I’m talking about the weather.

In both shows, the actresses always seems to be wearing stunning, and I mean really, really, gorgeous coats and capes.

I guess ShondaLand, which is what the shows that producer Shonda Rhimes has created are called, is someplace that doesn’t have temps above 60 degrees.

Spoiler Alert:  Maybe now wouldn’t be a good time to check out Annalise’s wardrobe as she is in prison. Trust me, it isn’t pretty right now.

So, here’s the thing; dressing well has nothing to do with size or age, and everything to do with specifics.

In these photos:

  • each woman is wearing red, but note in very different shades.
  • each is wearing a jacket, see I told you it’s always cold in ShondaLand, but in styles that flatter their individual shapes.
  • each woman looks incredibly confident and powerful.

YOU can dress like a confident and powerful woman too. All you have to do is know how.

Please stop thinking you can’t and start knowing you can.

See my on-line course  I created to get you from where you want to be, to actually being there.

The makeover you’ve always dreamed about getting, is only a click away.

Are you a Gladiator too?

Online Shopping Tips

So most of my clients hate clothes shopping, and many find online shopping even more overwhelming, and others  won’t even bother trying.

Unfortunately, or fortunately as it depends upon your shopping preferences, in-store shopping is not that productive for most women over 40.

Personally, I love both.

Online shopping offers thousands of options, which is why many avoid it and the best way t reduce the overwhelm, is yo use a filter.

Use these Online Shopping Tips to make navigating store’s websites a whole lot less stressful, and much more productive.

Use the retailors filters to narrow down the results.

When you select the clothing type, size, colors, price, and even brand,  instead of looking at hundreds of items, you will only see what is in your size, price range, and need.

By filtering out what you are not looking for, like sleeveless tops, T-shirts, certain colors, sizes, prices over $100, etc. you won’t get as frustrated and exhausted scrolling through tons of things you don’t want, need, or can afford.

Why Are some Stores Tricking Shoppers?

Stores Tricking Shoppers

Why are some stores stores tricking shoppers?

Well, I’m not one to say I told you so, but….. I did, and way before the news started covering the story.

I have been bringing attention to fake discounts for years, and I am so glad actions are being taken to stop tricking and protect shoppers.

Stores are now being sued for the make believe original prices and the false savings so many shoppers think they are getting. So why are some stores tricking shoppers? Quick answer, to make money.

Their system tricks shoppers into believing they are getting a great deal, therefore purchasing items based on the pretend deal the stores make you think you are getting.

You can read about the lawsuits now taking place in the NBC news story here.

A few months ago, I wrote about another way stores take advantage of shoppers. Check it out, if you missed what made me so darn mad.

 Buyers Beware

I find great deals at traditional stores, but those retailers that have fake original prices, are messing with you, so please don’t be fooled!

I’ve been very busy creating my very first on-line video series program: my Stress Free Personal Styling System, “How To Build A Wardrobe You’ll Love On The Budget You Have”.

I have wanted to create a system that I can share with all the women who would love to end their what to wear madness, and are not able to work with me personally. I’m almost done, and it has been hard work, and you know that anything worthwhile, takes some effort.
