How To Have a Wardrobe That Is Age Appropriate and Look Good Over 40

How To Have a Wardrobe That Is
Age Appropriate and Look Good Over 40

It’s tough out there for some women over 40, 50, 60, and beyond to choose clothes that are flattering and age-appropriate.

Whether for work or play, women are often confused as to what their wardrobe should consist of.

One of the most common goals a new client shares with me is wanting to look current but not silly. In other words, she wants to know how to have a wardrobe that is age appropriate and stylish, but not like she’s trying hard to look younger.

She might realize that her clothes are outdated, but feels silly when trying on the latest fashion trends.

There is a great expression in England, that pretty much sums it up: Mutton dressed as lamb. Def: a way of describing an ‘older’ woman who is dressed in a style that is more suitable for a younger woman.

Ex: “Do you think this dress is too young-looking for me? – I don’t want to look like mutton dressed as lamb.”

The problem with dressing in styles that are best for the under-35 set, is that they actually make us look older and sometimes silly.

You’ve likely seen some women wearing skirts or tops that are too short, holes in their pants, or wobbling in high-heeled shoes and thought: I don’t want to be ‘that’ woman.

Not knowing what style of clothes to buy and wear, is why some women question their fashion choices and start to get insecure and unsure when shopping.

I show my clients the very specific styling details that’ll fit and flatter their unique features, and how to have outfits that take their style out of the past, while not looking like she’s trying to look younger.

Dress age-appropriate tip: When a woman wears the right fitting clothes and styles specifically best for her, she automatically looks younger, professional, and more approachable.

So what can you do to avoid the mutton dressed as lamb dilemma?

Here are a few suggestions.

  1. Even if you are lucky enough to have a body that can fit into junior clothes, don’t shop in that department. For starters, the styles are designed for teenagers and the quality is not what you, as an adult, deserve.
  2. Go easy on the bling, and trends.  If a 15-year-old is wearing it,  you shouldn’t!
  3. Focus on fit and not size. Avoid getting trapped by only wanting to wear a certain size, even if it means squeezing into the garment. Too tight, can make us look bigger, older, and completely miserable.

Tips To Clean Out Your Closet

It’s that time of year again, so here are a few tips to clean out your closet.

When a new season or year starts, you might start the process of switching out your clothes for the upcoming change in the weather, and be somewhat forced to take a look at all the clothes you haven’t worn in years.

This can be a good thing.

This is a great time to give a hard look at your previous season’s clothes…but before storing those unworn clothes for yet another year, or opening your closet door and then promptly slamming it closed as you feel overwhelmed with the thought of cleaning it out, try the following ideas and tips.

First determine which are trash or treasure.

Start small when trying to decide which of your clothes, shoes, handbags, scarves, or jewelry to label as trash or treasure.

No, I don’t mean the clothes that may not fit you anymore, I’m suggesting that you just start 10 items and no more than 30 minutes at a time to have a little Q & A with yourself.

Use this chart as a guide, and I can guarantee that after you get started
you’ll actually enjoy the process and love the results.

When your closet is free of the clothes that don’t look good on you or don’t want to wear, not only will your closet be lighter, but you’ll actually feel lighter.

Cleaning out your closet will be very cathartic. Hey, that’s what I’m told over and over and over again.

Go here to get your clothes to stop stressing you out.

The Truth About Ordering Clothes In A Box

clothes in a box

No way can I count how many times I’ve been asked if I know about the companies that will ship you a variety of clothes in a box for you to try on.

Yes, way!

I know all about them and have seen quite a few sad expressions on my first-time client’s faces when I ask about some of the unworn and unloved pieces in her closet.

So why the long faces?

Well, often it is because she imagined that by telling the online personal stylist whatever info they requested, she would be getting pieces perfect for her.

Reality check time.

These services are NOT my competition, and no I don’t want to offer the clothes-in-a-box service. I won’t change my business model from serving to selling as I’m motivated by seeing a woman looking and feeling confident, and not by making money.

I don’t believe in telling women to wear Spanx to fit into their clothes, so why should I squeeze myself to fit into someone else’s business model? I hate constrictions of all kinds!!
If I don’t let my clients be pushed and squeezed into the wrong clothes for their shape and lives, why should I squish myself into what doesn’t fit my own business and personality?

These clothes in a box companies’ mission is to make money by selling you more and more, not to help you have a wardrobe that can be mixed and matched.

More stuff doesn’t mean you have more to wear.
But you probably already knew that.

You can make these online clothes-in-a-box services work better for you if you know what colors, patterns, styles, labels, and fabrics are the most flattering for you. And please request items that will give you the ability to make many more outfits vs just the one outfit they send you.

The best wardrobe is one that you can mix and match, instead of clothes that don’t go with anything you already own.

It might be fun to try a service that sends you clothes in a box all wrapped up with a pretty ribbon, but based on the regrets I’ve seen on women’s faces or hanging in their closets, it doesn’t always work out. I don’t want you to think something is wrong with you or your body if the clothes don’t look that great on you.

Remember, it’s not you. They simply were the wrong clothes for you.

“Want to feel “cuddling with baby goats” happy when you open your closet?

Then let me show you how to let go of the clothes you’ve been holding onto for all the wrong reasons and you’ll see that breaking up won’t be so hard, or messy, to do and it’s FREE!!!

Today is Compliment Your Mirror Day

Today  is Compliment Your Mirror Day

No, seriously on the calendar of silly days, today actually is
Compliment Your Mirror Day.

Now, here is what you need to do………

Stand in front of your mirror with your eyes closed. Put a big smile on your face and I mean a big smile.

Now, open your eyes.

Isn’t the picture of the person in your mirror absolutely stunning?

YES, it is because you truly are beautiful.

So, make sure to compliment your mirror for displaying the beautiful person being reflected back to you.

Are Crop Pants Right For You?

You know that pair of cropped or ankle pants in your closet you bought because everyone else was wearing them?

Ever feel that they don’t look as good on you as they do on someone else?

Here’s why and what I came up with to make my only and I mean only pair I own, work for me

  • Wear VERY high heels that will cause you a great deal of foot pain to make you truly look faaabulous in your cropped pants…JUST KIDDING!! When you look at the models and celebrities that looks so good in short pants, they are typically wearing very high heels…

or if they are VERY skinny and tall then they can pull off flats.

  • You can wear ankle boots, but that is for the fashion daring women or trend follower, which personally I am of neither.

  • If you are about 5’3 or under, cropped pants just make you look shorter so skip them altogether and wear full length to add height which also create a slimming effect.

So how about trying what I did.

When I put on my, see photo, black and white print pants on last summer, I wasn’t happy with how they looked on me anymore. Heels or flats, just weren’t right.

I was trying on shoes like Goldilocks looking for the ones that would make me happy, when…

I put on my only pair of ankle strap sandals and to me, they were just right.

The ankle strap filled in that extra space, and I no longer felt chopped up.

Try this only if you already have a pair of shoes like mine. Please do not go out to buy a pair, unless you are 5’5 or taller.

If you are already on the shorter side, you shouldn’t even own a pair of ankle strap shoes as the strap cuts the leg and makes you look shorter than you really are.

Take A Look At My Client’s Before & After

Warning: This is a real before & after. No special effects, angles or filters have been used…

just a few of my MANY tips plus buying the clothes I recomended.

Be sure to check out Dress Without Stress so you’ll get the tips that will make you go from wondering why you can’t find clothes you love to wear to knowing exactly what to look for and avoid…and then you’ll finally Dress Without Stress.

It’s always fun to see a makeover in magazines and on TV, so wouldn’t it be nice to know the details that make the after so much better than the before?
Of course, it would!
Take a look at my virtual client’s makeover before & after and how tiny tweaks made big improvements in how she looks.

Before

Before Dont’s
  1. Neckline is a bit too high for her specific proportions.
  2. Cap sleeves make her arms look out of proportion to her body.
  3. Shape of this top is making her look a few sizes larger than she actually is.
  4. The top color is not right for her personal coloring and is making her skin and features dull.
  5. Pants are too short for her height & make her look shorter and wider than she actually is.
  6. Her true height is 5’3 but the proportions of this outfit make her look shorter.

After

  1. This neckline makes her neck appear more graceful.
  2. Now her shoulders are more defined.
  3. She looks easily 10 lbs thinner without having to skip a single meal as this top fits her so well.
  4. This top color makes her skin tone look healthy and peaches & cream smooth.
  5. Full length pants are best on her vs cropped. Warm weather option would be capris ending just below knees.
  6. She’s still 5’3, but looks taller while still wearing flats.

Note: Both outfits are comfortable and casual. A woman does not have to feel constricted or be over-dressed to look and feel good.

Never, ever, does looking good mean you can’t wait to get home to rip your clothes off!! You know you’ve got a great and comfy outfit, when the first thing you do when you get home is anything but, changing your clothes.

Do YOU always know what to wear?

Tired of hating the clothes you have?

Hate shopping for clothes because buying hasn’t solved the you have nothing to wear complaint?

Well if you also want to Dress Without Stress, then go here so,

Style Less Frumpy

And saying Thank You a few times a day, cause you’ll be getting a whole lot of compliments.

“I was tired of looking in my closet and seeing clothes that I had spent money on but would never wear. I hate to think about how much money I have wasted buying clothes only to donate them never worn.
In the past, I thought that if I buy more expensive, but fewer clothes, I would have more I’d like to wear. But really, regardless of spending $5 or $100 on something, it still looked lousy on me so I didn’t wear it. Cheap versus expensive was not the issue; it was not knowing what worked for me.
Hiring Scarlett, as my personal Image Curator, I love saying that, gave me the guidance to know what to wear, buy, where to find it, and she is amazing at finding deals on quality items!
I am continuing to learn as I try more things and see ‘wow, I really see what she means, this style does NOT work on me!’
The truth is, that I feel better when I am wearing my ‘Scarlett’ outfits.”

Here’s An Easy Way To Make Your Neck Look longer

Here’s An Easy Way To Make Your Neck Look longer

Wish you had Audrey Hepburn’s enviable long neck?

I do but I don’t.

But I do know how to not make my neck look shorter, therefore longer.

Do wear shorter earrings than long ones.

Don’t wear earrings longer than approximately your upper lip.

If you wear longer earrings, you’re going to make your neck look shorter and emphasize an already short neck.

Notice how the woman being used to model these earrings has a very, very long neck. Then imagine these earrings on a more average length neck…not so great, right?

Little details make a big impact and if you want to learn more about them, check out my April 26, 2019, Stop Stressing About Dressing Styling Workshop.
