How to Fold Clothes For Packing a Suitcase

how to fold clothes for packing a suitcase

I’ve given the suggestions as to what to pack for as long as a week and with only a carry-on suitcase in other posts, but it is also important to know how to fold the clothes so you make the best use of a smaller amount of space.

I only took a few lingerie items, as they are easily hand washed in the hotel room, there is no need for more than 2 bras and perhaps 4 pairs of panties, I use the space in my shoes, which are in the shoe bags on top of my clothes, to stuff panties, socks, makeup, jewelry, etc. Since I was going to London, I knew packing an umbrella would be wise, and it did come in handy as you can see here.

Note, that the top portion of the suitcase is empty. that is where you can pack all your makeup and toiletries, in clear bags, so as to easily access them if needed for security purposes.

Above are the clothes I wore for my flight and packed with the handbag I used for my laptop, magazines, wallet, and a few other items I wanted to have handy on the airplane. If traveling to a tropical location, you can use the same bag for beach or pool use. Always think in terms of double duty.

I created a video for you, that shows how to fold clothes for packing a suitcase. I show each step of how I folded my clothes into a bundle. I got this great packing style tip from Real Simple Magazine.

Packing doesn’t have to be stressful or take up too much space! If you want to master the art of packing efficiently and stylishly for your next trip, book a call with me here and I’ll show you how to travel light without sacrificing your wardrobe options.

LOVE your tips! Thanks to your how to pack a carry on suitcase tips, I was able to pack for my 15 day destination wedding and honey moon using only a carry-on suitcase! Of course, I am carrying my wedding dress onto the plane separately.

You Are A Leader, but Do You Dress To Win?

Dress To WinWant To Know How To Dress To Win?

Via Twitter, I asked what one of the fabulous Women’s Campaign School at Yale attendees what her biggest takeaway was from my presentation. I love what she said, and here it is in plain English not Twitter speak:

“If you are a leader, it should be seen. If you don’t have time for yourself, how will people know you have the vision and time for them”

Shouldn’t you be a leader too? Don’t you want all those around you in both your business and personal lives, to believe that you care and will work hard to support them?

I had the privilege and honor to be asked to present my Dress To Win seminar to the Women’s Campaign School at Yale University.

73 women from all around the world who are either running for office or are looking to run campaigns, attended and had many questions about how to dress so as to project the right impression to their constituencies.

Based on all the questions and feedback that I received, I quickly realized that the goal of knowing how to dress to win did not exclusively apply to politics. All women want the same things:

* Dress age appropriately
* Look professional
* Know what style of clothing is best for their shape
* Convey ability and creativity
* To know which colors look good on them
* Have a wardrobe that does not cost a fortune
*Etc.
All the questions that you probably have as well.

It turns out that dressing to win is about understanding that your personal image affects what you get, give, and feel in the life that you live.

I have clients who have followed me for years until they made their first appointment with me. Why did they wait so long you ask?
Perhaps they did not realize what great leaders they really were and needed some time to accept that their personal image makes a huge difference in how they feel and what they say, without words, to those around them.

Let me save you some time; YOU ARE A LEADER!

Dress To Win

“I’ve been style-challenged pretty much most of my life. It had become a way of life…stressing over what to wear, deciding on something, and most times feeling unattractive, unsexy, and worst of all, not feeling myself.  I decided one day I didn’t want to feel like this anymore. I took an honest evaluation of my personal and business life and realized that many times I fell short of booking a job or reaching out to increase my network of friends because I didn’t feel great about myself. Scarlett has an amazing ability to get to know you quickly and choose looks that accentuate your unique and best qualities. I’m at my best when I feel great, and Scarlett has transformed an aspect of me that needed a boost. I feel more ready than ever to get out there and do it! Thank you, Scarlett! You are a style rock star!”

How Women Over 40 Over See Themselves

Stephen Dimmick is a fabulous NY and LA-based makeup artist, whom I discovered on Twitter. I especially enjoyed a post he once wrote, where he asks women to stop looking at themselves so closely in the mirror.
Stephen is correct, and so charming when explaining that nobody sees what you see in your closeup. I find this particularly helpful for women over 40 who start to focus too much on the little things, instead of the ‘big picture’.

Some women have become so self-conscious, that they actually are visiting plastic surgeons to find out how they can look better on Skype and FaceTime! No kidding, so please, let’s end this madness. If needed, use a magnification mirror for plucking, eyeliner and mascara application only and not for self-critiquing.

If your clothes and makeup are flattering, your perceived and actual flaws will disappear.

My tips:

Dark shadows under your eyes? Try wearing a different color.

Lines looking deep on your face? Try a different fabric.

There are many ways to look great without magnification and plastic surgery manipulation, and my clients use them every day as they now know what works best on them.

If you’re ready to discover what works best for you without resorting to drastic measures, book a call with me here and let’s work on enhancing your natural beauty with flattering clothes and makeup!

“Wardrobe Stylist Scarlett is a pleasure to work with. She’s professional, knowledgeable, and fun! I loved playing dress-up with her guidance. She arrived with a bag of tricks, ready to work in my closet to prune, create, tweak, and suggest wardrobe additions. By the time she left, I had a small pile of clothes to donate, an understanding of my most flattering styles, many outfit options, and a shopping list for wardrobe enhancements. She followed-up by emailing the photos she took of all the outfits we had created (accessories and all), which will make getting dressed and packing for trips much simpler. Don’t even question whether or not to hire her. Just do it! Wardrobe Stylist Scarlett has a great eye, is creative, understands clothing and different body types, and is really fun to work with. You will come away with clarity and confidence.”

The Perils Of High Heels

Do you try to wear shoes that fit perfectly as Cinderella’s did, or attempt to cram your tootsies into the ‘perfect’ shoe just like her evil step-sisters?

The Perils Of High Heels
The Perils Of High Heels

Many women are so determined to cram their feet in the wrong shoe, which in itself is not a natural look, just so they can wear certain styles, despite the pain and consequences.

I remember years ago I was shopping an incredible shoe sale in a very high-end store.  So many gorgeous shoes and boots all around me, at irresistibly low prices, yet I became frozen as I could not take my eyes off of one customer’s feet.

She was impeccably dressed, had towers of shoe boxes all around her and her credit card was about to turn to smoke from her huge purchase.
But, I could stop staring at those feet. You see, she had just finished testing out another pair of gorgeous, delicate and pointy-toed high heels, and she looked fantastic until she sat down and removed the shoes.
Never before had I seen feet like hers. They had bumps all over them, toes were curled in a multiple of directions and the arch of her feet resembled the Arc de Triumph in Paris, France.

The Perils Of High Heels

Please know that I am in no way exaggerating how deformed and unsightly her feet looked. I vowed right then, with the same power and conviction as Scarlett O’Hara did in Gone With The Wind, that as long as I would be wearing shoes, I would never be in foot pain again!

Why would I? I now saw first hand, actually first foot, what happens to women’s feet when they are forced to fit into shoes that look pretty but do not return the compliment to the wearer’s feet.

This problem is an issue for celebrities as well. Take a look at Supermodel Iman’s feet, which show the signs of may years of wearing shoes that were too tight and high for a woman to be walking in.

The Perils Of High Heels

On April 24, 2014, The New York Times had an article titled Make Them Fit, Please!  The article describes how some women are having procedures done to their feet beyond removing bunions, so they can wear designer shoes and high heels. Extreme measures for extreme shoes, with some women requesting to have their pinkie toes removed so they can wear some of the designer shoes, made so famous Sarah Jessica Parker portraying Carrie Bradshaw in Sex And The City.

I have a better idea. How about designers create beautiful shoes to fit our feet, instead of forcing us to fit into their shoes causing us deformities, pain, and short tempers too!

Thankfully there more and more companies are designing shoes to give us comfort, support, and style.
If you would like to ask for my recommendations, feel free to place your foot dilemma in the comment box below, and I will make some suggestions in a variety of price points so foot comfort can reign supreme!

Why sacrifice comfort for style when you can have both? If you’re tired of cramming your feet into shoes that look great but feel terrible, it’s time for a change. Book a call with me here and I’ll help you find stylish, comfortable shoes that compliment your feet—without the pain!

Online Shopping Tips

Online Shopping Tips

Did you know that a new mall has not been built since 2006? I found that to be somewhat alarming, but certainly understandable. After all, shopping is no longer brick and mortar, as now it’s click and order.

Online shopping is how more and more people shop, and the numbers keep growing.

Personally, I love shopping online as long as I get free shipping and can return what didn’t look or fit as well as I had hoped.

Many of my clients were not fans of shopping online before working with me, and now they love it.

Another perk of online shopping is that you have more to choose from than what the stores have on the floor or in the ‘back’.

Here are five of my online shopping tips:

1. Always look for the Free Shipping.

2. Order the size you usually wear plus one size larger. This is so you have lots of ‘wiggle’ room just in case you need it.

3. Read the customer reviews. There is tons of info here and it always influences my online shopping decisions.

4. Go straight to the on Sale category. That is what I do for myself and my clients, because saving money never goes out of style.

5. Please return what does not fit or look good on you. I see way too many unworn and ticketed purchases hanging in new clients’ closets, which equals lost money.

Thank you, Jane Pollak, for your generous praise.

Online shopping can be a breeze when you know what to look for! If you’re feeling overwhelmed with choices or unsure of what styles work best for you, I’m here to help. Book a call with me here, and let’s create a wardrobe perfect for you, and make online shopping productive, easier, and successful!

Quick and Easy Ways To Tie A Scarf

Quick and Easy Ways To Tie A ScarfQuick and Easy Ways To Tie A Scarf

I am a scarf fanatic and own more than I can count or will admit to you.

I love how an interesting and/or colorful scarf turns a blah outfit into a tah-dah outfit.

One of the questions I am most frequently asked is how to tie a scarf, as a lot of women struggle with what to do with all the beautiful scarves they already own.

I always show my clients simple ways to tie a scarf that will make their outfits look even better, more interesting, and more stylish.

Below are two of my favorite how-to-tie scarf videos.

The first is on YouTube and is artistic and fun to watch.

The second is mine, also on YouTube, and includes my own

Guess How Much?

save money for clothes

It is no secret to my clients, friends and family that I love a deal. I don’t just love saving money, I also can find a way to save money for clothes and accessories that make even the seasoned sales people gasp with envy and admiration.

I can’t stop myself, as it is in my genes. My mother was a master at stretching a dollar, and I learned not just how to save money but also get higher value merchandise for lower prices.

Since I started paying for my own clothes at the age of 16, I have had plenty of time and experience to hone my money saving skills and I love doing the same for my clients when I take them shopping.

No matter what my client’ s budget may be, I feel there is no need to pay more than necessary so I hit the sales racks first and look for style and quality as opposed to the name on the label.

Recently I was hired by a loving and generous gentleman, for me to to create an outfit for a very important job interview for his sister. He thought perhaps I could find a few other pieces to give her some other options. He gave me a budget to work with and here is what she left the store with:

3 bras
1 leather handbag
2 pairs jeans
1 pair black pants
1 jacket
8 tops

Based on the budget I was working with, I took her to Macy’s and had their coupons in hand.

So guess how much the total was?

A. $500

B. $400

C. $300

D. $200

Send me an email so you will know what the total dollars spent!! 🤑🤑🤑

If you’re curious how I managed to pull off this amazing deal, just wait until you see what I can do for your wardrobe! Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly makeover or a few stylish pieces to elevate your look, I’ve got you covered. Book a call with me here and let’s go shopping together—without breaking the bank!

“I highly recommend hiring Scarlett! She helped me purge the out-of-date and unattractive clothes from my closet, showed me new ways to wear my existing clothes & accessories to highlight my face and figure, and emailed me almost 50 pictures that evening of all of the outfits she put together. In addition, Scarlett made a list of the items I needed to purchase and can be hired to shop with me to make sure I make the best decisions. No more wasting time and money buying the wrong clothing items. She was a pleasure to work with and I had a great time in the process.” —Denise Baliotti The Finished Room

Is Someone Watching You?

facetimeBe careful when you place a call using your iPhone, as you never know who can see you when you don’t know it.

No, I am not a conspiracy theorist, only a woman out for your best interest because I don’t want you to ever be caught like a colleague of mine was, when she once made a business call from her iPhone.

Like many entrepreneurs, she works from her home and decided to stay in her pj’s and robe for the day. Personally, I love days like that, but now I will be aware of what can happen when I least expect it.

My colleague placed the phone down and spoke using its speaker to the gentleman she had never met before when he shocked her by when he commented on the fact that he could see her! Somehow her iPhone went to FaceTime, and sure enough, when she glanced down, she could see herself and the person with whom she was speaking. She quickly grabbed the phone and placed it to her ear, so as to end the somewhat embarrassing and shocking visual call.

Thankfully, she wasn’t giving herself a skin care treatment with a mud mask at the time of this FaceTime call. Now that would have been a shocker to the gentleman on the other line for sure

I did some research, and there are reports of this happening unintentionally, but it is also possible to press FaceTime instead of Call on your iPhone as they are near each other on the phone’s screen.

Keep this is mind next time you place or answer a call, and don’t say I didn’t warn you!

While you’re double-checking your iPhone settings, why not double-check your wardrobe, too? If you’re ready to feel more confident and stylish, let’s make sure you’re never caught off guard again—whether it’s on a FaceTime call or a client meeting. Book a call with me here and let’s get started on simplifying your wardrobe!

Have Your Contents Shifted?

Have Your Contents Shifted?

Have you ever heard a flight attendant ask the passengers to be cautious when opening the overhead compartments, as the contents may have shifted during the flight?

When I heard this on one of my trips to work with a client in another state, I immediately knew that this was the best way to explain what happens to our bodies.

One day when I was around 4o, I went to bed thinking I was looking good in my clothes and was content with my body.

The next morning I seemed to have awakened with rolls, bumps, and bubbles that I swear were not there the night before.

How come the jeans and T-shirt I successfully wore the day before, now made me look old and out of shape?

What happened????

Ladies, I am sorry to report that no matter how hard you exercise or how well you eat, our contents have shifted while we are flying thru our lives.

This is not a cause to grab an oxygen mask because you may now be hyperventilating.

It just means that a few changes need to be made so as to accommodate our shift.

If rolls are obvious, then wear clothes that disguise and cover them up. If the shirt and pants you beautifully wore before, now expose ruffles and ridges in your waist and or thighs, then get them out of your closet.

Replace them with clothes that lay over the troublesome spots instead of clinging to them for dear life.

To keep this simple, consider this:

If you put on a piece of clothing, and parts of it are holding on as tight as a one-year-old with separation anxiety, then stop wearing it.

Go for a larger size, or a looser fit and embrace the fact that your contents have indeed shifted.

Please stop beating yourself up over the inevitable change once over 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and beyond.

Is your wardrobe no longer working for your shifting shape? If you’re ready to embrace the changes and feel confident again, book a call with me today, and let’s create a style that fits your body now, without the stress!
