How To Care For Sweaters That Pill

sweaters that pillSweaters are being taken out of their Summer spots from closets and drawers ready for their cool weather debut……or are they? Does yours have the unfortunate clothing affliction of Pilling?

Don’t risk looking cheap.

Sweaters that pill, will make one that costs as much as $200, look like it came out of a dollar bin. The finest cashmere or far less expensive acrylics all have the potential to become sweaters that pill, therefore looking sloppy and cheap.

Take a close look at your wooly companions, and check for pilling sweaters.

Nubby sweaters look, well shabby.

Buzz the heck out of those fluffy bumps with a fabric shaver like this one from Walmart. These shavers remove the offending pills, without damaging the sweater and are like a makeover for your pilling sweaters making them look good as new.

Looking good as new

I’m Done!

Style Advice for Real Women

I’m Done!! I wrote a book filled with Style Advice for Real Women

Once upon a time, I announced at a women’s networking event that I wanted to write a fun book filled with styling tips for women. Well, I did it!! I started writing my book, about 1 year ago and it is done! Twenty four chapters filled with tips you didn’t know you should know, laughs, and no cost easy to implement steps to take, to end your what to wear woes.

The title is: Stop Stressing About Dressing and is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

FYI: My clients know exactly what this title means.

As an example of my book’s content and tone, one chapter is titled:

Do You Know Where Your Breasts Are?

Come on now, if you are a woman over 50, you know exactly what I am referring to.

Book Excerpt:

Remember what Grandma used to look like when she was wearing an old bra or shudders, no bra at all?
Just because we get older and gravity is having a big laugh on behalf of a variety of our body parts, we can easily lift up our breasts to where they belong.
Did you know that when you are wearing poor fitting and old bras you most probably look older than you are or feel? Who wants that?
Go get a professional bra fitting, and expect to be amazed.

If you have not had a professional bra fitting in the last 2 years, you and your breasts, are way overdue for some much-needed attention. I recommend neighborhood lingerie stores, Soma, Nordstroms, Bloomingdales, and other better department stores for great service and selection. Please do not shop at a store that uses models with angel wings. We are not angels, and certainly don’t look like those perfect specimens. Okay, I don’t look like them.

SO WHAT?

So what if your scale doesn’t show the number you want.
So what if your hair is getting more grey.
So what if your body is not ‘perfect’.
None of these so what’s, define or have power over you…..unless you let them.

Let’s See If You are Cheap Or Expensive?

Are You Cheap Or Expensive?

Take a look at this great article from Redbook with tips on how to not wear shoes that look cheap, no matter what they cost.

All the examples are high-heeled shoes, but the advice pertains to lower heels as well. Recently I wrote about how too high heels, can not only be dangerous but also very distracting.
No matter how great your outfit may be, the wrong shoes will ruin all your efforts.
If you have shoes that are worn out, then get them out… of your closet and off your feet.

Please don’t wreck your wardrobe with cheap-looking shoes

Here Is How To Look Thinner In Photos

Easy to follow tips for how to look thinner in photos.

It is not a problem for me to advice women on what to wear and how to wear their clothes, to look and feel better about themselves, however when it comes to posing for photos, I need help.

I do not like thinking about how to pose or angle my body for optimum results, but this short video tutorial is so good, that I just might give t a try.

How about you?

If you read my last post, you learned of my strong desire and determination to one day work with Gayle King, to show her how she can wear her beloved bright colors, be comfortable, and command the room just like all my other speaker clients.

So how unbelievable is it, that the day my post came out, my husband sent me this picture of a woman he was chatting with at the airport in Kentucky?

How to look thinner in photosYup, there he is with Ms. Gayle King herself, and for the record, he was the one who interrupted me as I was answering Gayle’s question of “what do you do?”

“I want other women to experience Scarlett’s magic. She is AMAZING!! I can’t believe I waited this long to find someone like her. I don’t like shopping, and SHE DOES and she has the best eye. Before working with her, I was in old, tired, out of date wear. Now I look and feel terrific. Somehow she finds the PERFECT clothes at an INCREDIBLE price. I can’t wait to have her line up my fall fashions. Thanks Scarlett! Everyone’s raving about my look now!” —Linda Albright Unleash Your Biz

Who Can Help Me Play Dress Up With Gayle King?

What Should Women Wear When Speaking
Gayle King Speaking at WOW 2014 Forum

I have had a goal for the past four years to show Gayle King how much more fabulous she can look off the air, and sometimes on as well.

I have seen her in The Westchester Mall, but did not bother her, have mutual business acquaintances, spoken to her at a C.U.R.E. fund raiser, but got interrupted just as she asked me what I do……I’m still not over this. I feel that one day I will have the pleasure of showing her how fabulous she can look, using the many clothes she already owns, but worn differently than she does now.

When my client, Jane Pollak, told me she was speaking at the Wow Forum 2014 held by the Northwest Connecticut Chamber of Commerce in Torrington Ct., and that Gayle King would be the keynote speaker, I knew I just had to attend. Finally, I might have a chance to finish my conversation with Gayle King, hear her, Jane Pollak, and a number of other fabulous women speak and inspire myself and fellow attendees.

Well, Ms. King was delayed by an hour and a half, so she spoke and ran, and I lost my chance again. She was charming, relatable, informative and intelligent while she spoke, but had to be helped up onto the stage as her heels were stilettos. Although she said it was her bad knees that caused her to need help to get up on that stage, I am not convinced. She also kept tugging at her dress so it would not keep riding up. She was slightly distracted by the tightness of her dress,  and I found myself distracted from what she was saying while she was on the stage.

I would love the opportunity to show Ms. King, how she can wear her beloved bright colored clothes in flattering and no need to tug at ways. Oh how I long to show her that there are shoes that are sexy, flattering and comfortable, without going from one extreme to another. Ex: Stilettos to flip flops.

Ouch: The wrong shoes to wear while speaking

Gayle King loves bright colors

On the other hand, Jane Pollak was looking stunning and never had to tug or need help to walk, and she too was wearing heels, but the not the kind that gives you nose bleeds.

Jane was fully focused on her talk and audience, never distracted or uncomfortable. Looking good should never have to make a speaker feel antsy or preoccupied with how she looks or if a seam, knee, or button may pop.

Sorry about my fuzzy photography.

What Should Women Wear When Speaking
Jane Pollak at WOW 2014 Forum

My clients who are speakers, authors and coaches always have an outfit to wear that will make them look and feel that they command the room and stage, and still have room for lunch in their waistlines. Bet you know that feeling.

So, what should women wear when speaking?

1. Shoes that add some height, but do not hurt or cause blisters. They exist, and my clients and myself own a few pairs.

2. Tops, dresses, pants and skirts that lay smooth on the body so they do not ride up or make you think that you cannot eat a thing till you get home and rip off your clothes.

3. An outfit that reflects a speaker’s authority, authenticity and accomplishments.

3 Ways For Women Over 40 To wear Skinny Pants

3 Ways For Women Over 40 To wear Skinny Pants.

Back a few years ago, I would not wear skinny pants simply because I looked terrible in them. Tops were typically designed to be cropped and the skinny pants were made so tight, that tools were practically required to pry my body in or out of them.

But then fashion designers heard the cries of women all over the world, as they wiggled their way out of their skinny pants, and added lycra to them so women would no longer need to go to extremes to get in and out of their skinny pants.

Around the same time, cropped tops were being replaced with longer tops. Perhaps designers actually noticed that most women over the age of 30 were tired of pulling down their shirts so as not to expose their belly buttons.

Now, I knew how to wear skinny pants and now many of my clients how to do so as well.

Here are some of my tips on how to wear skinny pants, no matter what age or size a woman may be:

1. Curvy, hippy or wider in the middle shaped women should wear tops that stop just below the widest part of your hips.

2. Straight body shapes can wear tops that meet the waistline or all the way down to to the hips. See below, how one of my clients looks fabulous in the right pair of skinny pants in one of the before and after pictures below.

3. Skinny pants can be worn tucked into boots, with flats or heels. Personally, I love wearing skinny pants with boots.

The photos on the top of this post are from a How To Wear skinny jeans feature, with great tips by Adam Glassman, in an issue of Oprah magazine.

“I ordered the dress we talked about; it is a knock out! I would never have chosen that for myself, and I think it’s the one I’ll wear to both the wedding and the ceremony for my friend the following week. Can’t believe it only cost $60! I greatly appreciated your keen and objective eye to help me know what might look good on me, and I found your knowledge of the stores merchandise invaluable. I just don’t have the time or patience to shop, and you knew exactly what to suggest at three or four stores I like. I will happily recommend you to my friends and I’d love to delegate my shopping entirely to you!” – Boston, Ma.—Mari Brennan Barrera

Divorce Style Makeover Tips

how to dress after divorce
Divorce Style Makeover Tips

It happens. Did it happen to you? A special friend? A relative? Often, when you least expect or want it, it happens.

It is the D-word: Divorce.

Divorced, Despair, and What To Wear?

So here you are, single again, and questioning everything about yourself just like you did when you were in High School, except now you are in the school of life.

Why was I not good enough? What did I do wrong? Is it because I’m old? Is it because I no longer look the way I did when we first got married?

Who would want me now? How can I compete with younger women to find a loving partner? Who would find me attractive?

Then you might start telling yourself some very destructive and self-sabotaging messages, such as:

*Now I’ll be alone for the rest of my life.
*I hate how I look.
*I look tired.
*I look old.
*I look terrible in all my clothes.

I am sure you have had a few of the damaging inner chatter talks, but I want to tell you to stop talking and start listening.

You are never too old to love how you look. NEVER! The only person you have to impress is yourself and only yourself. When you like what you see in a full-length mirror, others will as well.

I see that sparkle in a woman’s eyes when she sees herself in clothes that transform her from feeling frumpy to fabulous. ALL women can have that sparkle, no matter their age, size, budget, or marital status.

Don’t think you have to dress like you are in your 30’s to look desirable, as that will backfire in a big way. When women dress like they are a few decades younger, it often makes them look even older and occasionally a bit silly.

FYI: This is a chapter from my book, Stop Stressing About Dressing.

Use These Divorce Style Makeover Tips to get a fresh start on transforming how you feel and see yourself.

  1. Get all new bras professionally fitted, of course, as well as panties. Only you have to know how pretty your lingerie looks…for now, that is.
  2. Donate or sell the clothes that bring up negative or sad emotions. If the dress you wore on a special anniversary or other event makes you feel down or causes out loud sighing, get it out of your home just like your ex.
  3. Don’t keep the empty closet space from your ex’s exit as a shrine. One of my clients emptied her ex-husband’s custom-made closet, so I suggested turning it into a shoe and handbag closet, which she did. Now she smiles when she opens its doors instead of mourning what once was.
  4. Try a new hairstyle, but shampoo first. Think: I’m going to wash that man right out of my hair.
  5. Get a new makeup and skincare routine. Each product that you apply is a form of rejuvenation. YOU deserve to be pampered.
  6. Get a manicure regularly, or do your own nails. No more getting your hands dirty is required.
  7. Pick one of your best features and highlight it with your clothes and accessories. This could be your eyes, hair, skin, legs, or even a sense of humor.
  8. Dress nicely every single time you go out. Whether you are walking the dog, buying groceries, going to the library, the mall, or getting a root canal. Dress like you won’t be embarrassed if you bump into someone you know. Not only will you feel good that you made the effort, but you’ll look good too.

It is never too late to look your best, start over, and look forward. There’s a reason people don’t walk backward!

End any frustrations you have regarding what to wear dilemmas with a virtual consultation.

Two Products You Should Know About

women networking

Here are two products that make me feel like Arnold Horshack on Welcome Back Kotter, saying, “ooo, ooo, ooo”.

As many of you know, part of being an entrepreneur is attending lots and lots of networking events. They are crucial if you want both your personal and business life to grow and flourish.

Not only have I made dear friends, connected with many, many wonderful future clients, but I also discover some of the coolest products that women have created for women.

Last week I attended a wonderful dinner in NYC hosted by Running With Heels and Ellevate, formerly known as 85 Broads, and met two inspiring women entrepreneurs.

women networking

The first, Cassandra, created a genius product that is lightweight and easily portable. It is PYSIS, The Posh Galosh – overboots Protect Your Shoes… and arrive In Style, whatever the weather.

When I think of all the times I had to rethink my outfit just so I could avoid wearing nice shoes in torrential rain, or slushy snow. Sometimes I literally got wet feet before arriving at events,  and I really wish I had already owned a pair of PYSIS. And, ‘to boot’, they can be folded to fit inside a bag. Great for traveling and will also fit into my carry-on suitcase.

The second amazing woman I met, Tanea, founded She’s Got Papers, a line of unique and fun stationary.  I love that Tanea’s tagline is’ “say it the write way.” A hand written note is still the best way to show you care, and hers are clever and one of a kind.

See Tanea’s inspiring story on becoming an entrepreneur here.

I bought two sets of cards that are perfect for me to send to my clients.
