Are fashion Magazines Dying Out For Women Over 40?

Are fashion Magazines Dying Out For Women Over 40?Are fashion Magazines Dying Out For Women Over 40?

I miss being inspired by fashion magazines, which makes me ask:
Are fashion magazines dying out for women over 40?

I remember as a teenager, being so excited when my mother’s monthly issues of  Harpers Bazaar and Vogue arrived in the mail.

Oh, those gorgeous women, perfect makeup, hair, and clothes. Classy, stylish, and oh so inspiring.

When it was time for me to grow and dress up, I couldn’t afford those clothes, yet I was inspired to create outfits using clothes that were in my budget.

Fast forward to today and being easily inspired is not so easy, and it’s no wonder woman, especially those who follow and/or hire me, are searching for flattering and wearable fashion for women over 40.

So listen, I’m not trying to further depress you, and maybe I’m pointing out the obvious, but unless you’re totally into expensive labels and outfits that will turn heads 360 degrees, you can no longer strictly rely on fashion magazines to get your wardrobe styling creative juices flowing.

Note: Often high fashion outfits are now styled to be artistic but that does nothing for those of us who have to figure out what to wear to have dinner with friends, meet a client or give a presentation.

Oh, and don’t get me started on how some store windows. The one above can make you want to run in the other direction.

All of this doesn’t mean it’s time to throw in the towel, and keep wearing the same things or stop trying to step up your wardrobe and self-confidence. It just means you need to look elsewhere for ideas.

One suggestion is to take a look at the store and online clothing catalogs for more wearable and practical outfit ideas.

It’s always a good idea to try different labels and sizes to see how they fit your current shape and size.

Listen, the labels I wore in my 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, etc. don’t fit me as well as they used to. One of us has changed, and I think it was me. Experience has taught me that I’m not the only one.

Below are a few of my favorite catalogs for you to look at for relatable and realistic styling inspiration and real-life outfit ideas and you can buy similar looks on any budget at different stores,

“I just don’t want to look like a school teacher”.

That’s what a new client told me during our first phone call.
That funny line told me so much about what she wanted and needed from her styling consultation with me.

How would you tell me what you needed and wanted to stop your stressing about dressing?
Let me know your answer via email.

What Is A Flip-Flop Sock?

What Is A Flip-Flop Sock?
Goodbye sandals.

October starts a sad time for me, although only until May.

This is the time I have to say goodbye to showing my toes. Not because I need a pedicure, well not yet, but because the temps dip just below 60 degrees and shudders, I wear shoes instead of sandals.

Frankly, I never handle this footwear change very well.

The good news is that it will be back in the ’70s again, and I’ll be back in sandals in no time flat. Actually, I really will be in flats so that my feet will not only be free but also comfy…

But I can promise you won’t be seeing me trying to convert flip-flops into year-long appropriate shoes with flip-flop socks.

Bet you’re asking what is a flip-flop sock?

Well, if you can’t pull yourself away from wearing flip-flops during colder days, these socks just might be what you’re looking for.

What Is A Flip-Flop Sock

Tip: These flip-flop socks are great for when you get a pedicure on cold weather days and that’s the only time I might possibly wear them.

WARNING: Wearing flip-flop type sandals too often is actually bad for your feet. Here is an article to back me up on this.

The website Scary Mommy inspired me to write this post. They come out with some funny stuff on a regular basis. Their name says it all.

“Thank you so much for my personal styling call. It was a blast, and I’ve told everybody I know about it!
I’ve gone what for me is completely nuts, buying many of the clothes you suggested I try. At first, I tried to find styles similar to your recommendations — I thought I could do it on my own! But I couldn’t! So I stopped wasting time and went back to the shopping links you sent me.
As you promised, this hasn’t been stressful for me for even one second. I am looking at everything and everybody with new eyes, and I do indeed hear your uplifting voice in my head.” Jane Campbell Back In Sorts Organizing Systems

Don’t Make This Styling Mistake

Don't Make This Styling Mistake

Don’t Make This Styling Mistake.

I almost had an accident while shopping last week.

We’re supposed to look both ways when crossing a street to avoid an accident.

We should also look both ways, front and back, to see ourselves in the mirror when trying on clothes to avoid a fashion accident.

And now, I suggest we look three ways to avoid looking like we’re expecting, which in my case would be an ‘accident’.

1) Front
2) Rear
3) Side

Don’t Make This Styling Mistake

While trying on a few things in Bloomingdale’s dressing room, I was excited to try on this white shirt.

It looked like a winner on the hanger. I could tell it would cover my tummy, panty line, and arms, and it was a no-iron fabric. BLISS!!

But then, I had to look three ways to see the styling accident coming my way.

I loved this top from the front and rear views, but when I looked from the side, I wondered how far along I was. 😬

Tip: Use a full-length mirror when checking your outfits from all three sides.
If you don’t have one, please get one.
Consider it a true must-have for your wardrobe.

Note:  Clearly I was quite dissatisfied with my side view, but when I actually was pregnant, and younger, I loved that angle of myself.

“When I hired Scarlett, I finally committed to investing in myself, as I just wanted to stop feeling stuck or blah about what I was wearing.
I was simply tired of feeling like I didn’t have the “right” things to wear.
Scarlett helped me get rid of the clothes that were not serving me well and created a closet full of outfits I could wear.
It was also really helpful to learn the key pieces that were missing from my wardrobe and how to best use my accessories.”

Here’s A Quick & Easy Closet Makeover Tip

I’m embarrassed to say that my closet was ugly
&
needed a closet makeover.

Change is good and easy.

No More Wire & Plastic Hangers!

You would be amazed at how a $20 dress can look as good as a $200 dress when hung on a simple attractive hanger. Just as surprising, is how bad a $200 dress can look on a wire or plastic store hanger.

Closet Makeover
Closet Makeover – Before

This used to be how I hung my clothes. Yes, the hangers are all the same, but they are ugly. Plastic white hangers tend to turn yellow and stand out in an unattractive manner.

Hang all your clothes on the same type and color hanger, and you’ll find yourself smiling each time you open your closet doors.

Imagine how only one simple change such as switching out your hangers will make, and how much more can be done with your “I can’t find anything to wear” closet.

I used these from Amazon.

Well, you don’t have to imagine, because when you join my FREE 5-day Clean Your Closet Plan to End Your Closet Shame.

4 Tips To Help You Shop End Of Season Sales

4 Tips To Help You Shop End Of Season Sales
4 Tips To Help You Shop End Of Season Sales

Oh, how I love shopping end of season sales.

I get such pleasure out of buying a pair of boots for about 70% off in the summer or a pair of sandals in winter at similar savings.

I admit trying on anything with wool during the summer, or sleeveless in the winter is tough, but think how snuggly you’ll feel in your bargain sweater, coat, bathing suit, or waterproof boots while others are scrambling to find something in the stores at full price.

Below are a few tips to help you shop sales & not waste your money or time.

  1. Shop the stores in person and online that you usually stay away from because you think they are too expensive.
A pair of shoes that originally were $200, that are now reduced to $90 will last you longer and be more comfortable than a pair that retails for only $60.
  2. Sign up for any shopper program a store may have so that you get extra savings, sales alerts and rewards you can use towards future purchases.
  3. When you shop online use the category filters to personalize your search. For example: Select your best colors, which if you worked with me or another image consultant you’d know them, plus your size, price range, and item type.
This way you won’t be bombarded with hundreds of sneakers or leggings in all sizes. And if you are looking for sneakers and leggings, selecting your size will eliminate a whole lot of eye blurring headache producing nope not for me items.

See this example of category filters from Nordstrom.

4 Tips To Help You Shop End Of Season Sales

4. Don’t worry about returns. Most stores offer free shipping both ways, or you can easily return an online purchase in the store itself.
P.S. I highly recommend returning what doesn’t fit or look right vs. holding on to them because you are thinking “one day it’ll fit” or just don’t bother returning what you won’t be wearing.
I cannot even count how many times I’ve seen clothes in a woman’s closet still with the price tag on simply because she never got around to making the return.
No, no, and no to not getting your money back.

FYI: S-A-L-E was the first word I taught my daughter to read from the Gap window while pushing her in the stroller in the mall..yes I may have created a shopping monster, but she sure knows how to save money on clothes.
