“Scarlett, is a pleasure to work with. She’s professional, knowledgeable, and fun! I loved playing dress-up with her guidance. She arrived with a bag of tricks, ready to work in my closet to prune, create, tweak, and suggest wardrobe additions. By the time she left, I had a small pile of clothes to donate, an understanding of my most flattering styles, many outfit options, and a shopping list for wardrobe enhancements. She followed-up by emailing the photos she took of all the outfits we had created (accessories and all), which will make getting dressed and packing for trips much simpler. Don’t even question whether or not to hire her. Just do it! Scarlett has a great eye, is creative, understands clothing and different body types, and is a really fun to work with. You will come away with clarity and confidence.”– L.S. New York, NY

4 Tips To Get Out The Clothes You Don’t Wear Out Of Your Closet

4 Tips To Get Out The Clothes You Don’t Wear Out Of Your Closet.

Happiness is: Having A Closet Filled With Clothes You’ll Actually Wear.

So by now you would have had gone thru your clothes and edited out what doesn’t work. If you didn’t then today is the perfect day to get your closet in shape by taking the following steps:

Step# 1 Remove all tops that are too short.

Step# 2 Remove all pants, dresses, and skirts that are too short.

Step# 3 Remove all tops that have shoulder pads from the 80′s and 90′s and/or look like it was worn on a TV show from that time period.

So now the final step, and an easy one……………drumroll, please………

Step# 4 If it is stained, has holes or is in a non-flattering color or fit, then get it out of your closet and drawers!!! You should only have in front of you pieces that make you feel and look good. Nothing should take up space that cannot be worn, or is only there to remind you of times gone by, and/or if only I were that thin again. Sound familiar?

If you take the time to follow these simple steps, you will save many hours trying to get thru the jungle of your closet to find what will look good on you. You’ll also spend much less time putting back all the clothes you took out while trying to figure out what to wear.

The photo above was sent to me by my client Jane Pollak, as a thank-you card, after I had organized her closet. She always knows what to wear, and as you can see has a variety of choices. There are no duplicates and nothing that wouldn’t look good on her every day for any occasion.

Tip: Use the same hangers for all your clothes, and your closet will look bigger and more organized.

A Real Before and After Makeover

Before and After Makeover.

Ever wonder why most of the TV makeovers take a woman in jeans and then put her in a cocktail dress as part of her makeover?

Let’s not forget, she is also placed in heels she can barely walk in, and the TV stylists often remove her glasses so, sadly, she cannot even clearly see what she now looks like.

That kind of makeover drives me crazy because the women’s lifestyle, budget, and needs were not considered for her makeover. These are made-for-TV makeovers and not for real women like you and my clients.

You rarely need to wear a cocktail dress, but you do need to know what and how to wear what you already own and what you should buy to expand your wardrobe and make it easy for you to figure out what to wear for the 300-plus other days of the year.

You likely want to know what to wear to the grocery store, a date, or to meet a client or friend. You know, all that real-life kind of stuff.

Here are a few before and after makeovers for you to see.

Each client told me these music to my ears words: “I never would have put these pieces together”.

Personal styling consultations allow you to learn which colors, cuts, and styles will be the most flattering on you with what you already own and should buy.

Imagine how successful you’d be shopping for new clothes when you’ve learned what works best for you.

Imagine getting excited to get dressed and go out, instead of being stressed and unsure of how you look in your clothes.

And then she said…

“Scarlett’s warmth and kindness immediately put me at ease as soon as she stepped in the door. She came to help me put together an outfit for the most important moment of my career, giving my first TEDx talk! I was working through my stage fright, and I knew that if I looked great on stage, I would feel much more confident on the big day.
Scarlett helped me choose the right colors for my skin and hair, and ended up not only choosing a fabulous outfit for the TEDx talk, but she also put together many more outfits for my professional life. I would never have thought of combining that blouse with that jacket and skirt. It was like getting five new outfits without spending a penny on clothes.”

Clothes Shopping Tips For Women To Stop Wasting Your Money

 Shopping Tips For Women

Do all your clothes look the same?

As a savvy and creative personal shopper, I help you save money when shopping for clothes, and you can as well when you follow my shopping tips for women.
Do you find yourself buying the same thing over and over? Are you always buying black pants, even though you already have more than 3 pairs? Another pair of black shoes and/or a handbag?
And really, how many white shirts do any of us really need? If you answered yes, then you are guilty of overspending money on your clothes and as a personal shopper, I can show you how to stop wasting money on clothes you probably don’t need.

Duplicates in your closet?

If you see duplicates in your closet, then you have spent money on items you really did not need and did not buy the clothes and accessories that would have truly expanded your wardrobe. As a personal shopper, I select clothes for my clients that are unlike what they already own, and will expand their abilities to create more outfits than they ever thought possible.
Many women tend to reach for the clothes they are familiar with when they go shopping. The trouble with that, is they then limit how many new outfits can be created with what they already own.
Next time you hit the stores, resist the urge to buy what you already own, and buy something you don’t!

Pear Shape Tips

Pear Shape Tips

Do you have a pear shape, triangle shape, or small shoulders?

When you need or want, to distract from a wider middle and hips, bring attention to your shoulders.

By bringing the eye up, the middle and bottom will be less noticeable.

Isn’t that what most women really want?

Use color blocking, patterns, scarves, and statement necklaces, not a thin strand of pearls or a small pendant-style piece to bring the focus up and away from below.

I took a picture of the top, see above, I saw in a store to show how color-blocking is ideal for making small shoulders look broader and taking attention away from anything below.

And then she said

Pear Shape Tips

“I had a ball going through my closet with you and our color consult was helpful and revealing.  I loved your advice about necklines, waist lines, jewelry, and colors to wear near my face. Now, I am happy to have my eyes pop instead of a double chin or a padded hip. It fascinated me to discover why some perfectly lovely items do not leave me feeling as confident as I thought they should. I didn’t think it likely but you found outfits that I would not have put together and you re-created 20 outfits from what I already owned. I can’t wait to pack for my upcoming trip. I am a Scarlett Image convert.”    —Denise Costabile

Woman Ask Should I Wear Pantyhose or Bare Legs?

Woman Ask Should I Wear Pantyhose or Bare Legs?

You’re invited to a formal affair, and you ask yourself, pantyhose or bare legs? Some have told you that wearing pantyhose is old-fashioned and not in style. But, what if you don’t feel comfortable being bare-legged? Perhaps you have spots or veins or just hate the idea of not having pantyhose on your legs.

I get that because I often feel the same way, which is why I suggest a very sheerstyle so it looks and feels like you are not wearing pantyhose, yet gives you all the benefits while making your legs look flawless.

Pantyhose or Bare Legs?

“As the owner of a marketing agency, personal shopper Scarlett understood the “look” I wanted to achieve. She presented me with mix-and-match options that were age-appropriate and budget-friendly. Now, I feel much more confident when I am making new business presentations, facilitating client meetings and attending networking events. I actually look forward to getting dressed each day. I can’t wait to shop with Scarlett again!”

Is Your Mirror Telling You The Truth?

mirror

A full-length mirror should be in each of your homes, and preferably near where you get dressed every day. But, did you know that your mirror could be lying to you?

Real Simple Magazine had a small blurb regarding how you place your mirror so that you see the ‘truth’ in your reflection.

Very simply, do not lean your mirror against a wall or door, as that will artificially make you look slimmer and taller, and you won’t see the actual way your clothes look on you.

Be sure to place or hang your mirror flat against a door or wall, and leave the looking younger, thinner and taller to me. The right fit, as well as the style of clothes, will make you look great for real.

Don’t let your mirror lie to you.

Clothing Size doesn’t matter

Clothing Size doesn't matter

Personal shopper tip: Clothing Size doesn’t matter, but fit does.

Do you only try on one size, and if it doesn’t fit you give up?  Instead of passing on that item, why not try it on in another size, even if that means going a size up.

For instance, when looking for the right fit in pants or a skirt, look for a smooth fit at the hip, and if needed have a tailor take in the waist. Men use tailors all the time, and you never hear a man complain about what size they wear.
Women, on the other hand, are very self-conscious about what size they wear. I see too many women pass up on getting a great fit simply because they won’t wear anything not in ‘their’ size. There is even a women’s clothing line that does not put the size label in a visible spot on their jackets so that women do not feel uncomfortable when the jacket is resting on the back of a chair. So cut your size label out if you cannot stand the sight of it, but remember that nothing looks or feels better than a good fit.

Clothing Size doesn't matter“I’m the first one to tell people, when they compliment me on how I look, that I have a secret weapon: Wardrobe Stylist Scarlett Debease. I’ve worked with Scarlett for years now and recommend her heartily to family, friends and colleagues. She not only shops with me for beautiful pieces to add to my wardrobe, but she also comes to my home and coordinates the new purchases with the rest of my wardrobe, then photographs the outfits to create my own personal look-book. I NEVER have to think, “What will I wear today?” I simply consult my look-book and get dressed. I know I’ve saved time and money using Scarlett’s invaluable service.”—Jane Pollak Jane Pollak, Inc.

Clothes Shopping Tips For Women

Agree or Disagree that friends don’t let friends shop alone?

Clothes Shopping Tips For Women

One of my Always Know What To Wear Clothes Shopping Tips For Women tips is to shop alone.

Please read the email I received below, from an attendee at one of my presentations. She really confirmed why I strongly suggest women should shop alone.

Hi, Scarlett,

I attended the event last week and heard your presentation and I laughed when you suggested that we shop alone, and not with a friend who will dress us in her tastes and not mine.   This was my recent experience. A friend we’ll call “Floral freak” selected an orange, yep, ORANGE floral top for me and she enthusiastically said it complimented my looks. Upon reflection, I do think it was the top she was admired and not me in it. It was half price and we could not resist!
When my wits returned and I was home again with buyer’s remorse, I decided to donate it to someone who actually looks good in orange. And that I will. Thanks again!”

When you are trying on clothes at a store, follow your initial reaction and not someone else’s opinion. I pick the clothes for my clients to try on from their closets or store racks, but it’s their decision to make as to whether they love wearing them.

Trust your gut, or you too may end up wasting your money on the wrong clothes.
