Are You Able To Strike A Power Pose?

Strike A Power Pose
Strike A Power Pose

Have you heard about the power of a power pose?

In addition to what a woman says, her non-verbal body language, often speaks louder than her words and it also changes how we you see yourself.

What we say to ourself matters, and way too often we don’t talk nicely  to ourselves.

So, STOP it!

Time to, as Madonna once sang: Strike A Pose…Strike A Power Pose.

When you put your hands on your hips, in the now named wonder Woman Pose, you send messages to your brain and to other that you have confidence, power and strength.

You’ll get respect and self confidence, and the proof about how body language affects how others see us, can be seen in the TedTalk: Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are by social psychologist Amy Cuddy in her 2012. She shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.

Her Ted Talk is getting close to 36 million views!!!

But, Horrors, Power Posing Can’t Work For Some Women, If:

  • Clothes don’t fit well, as her hands will be busy pulling and tugging at herself.
  • Her shoes hurt…OUCH.
  • She hates how she looks in her clothes.
  • Keeps wearing the same outfit, over, and over, and over, and get the picture?
  • Lacks the skills to take steps to increase self-confidence.

How you hold and pose your body, transforms the message you are sending to the room and to your inner confidence.

In her talk, Amy Cuddy states that “Tiny Tweaks Can Make Big Changes”.

I would like to tweak her statement and ask:

What’s stopping you from tweaking your wardrobe?

I’m really, really good at tweaking, not to be confused with twerking, which I cannot and will not do.

Virtually or personally, I’m here to help you to stylishly strike a power pose and represent your business and career the way you should be seen and heard.

So go ahead, no-one is looking: go Strike A Power Pose.

Strike A Power Pose

Before I worked with Scarlett I had a closet full of clothes and no idea how to put them together. After just a few hours of working with me in my home, my closet was organized, all the clothes that didn’t work were gone and I had lots of outfits pulled together, that make me feel great when I walk out the door. She went though my bags, my jewelry and without me buying one new thing I feel, based on all the compliments I get, like a million bucks. Belinda Wasser

Yes, You Can Wear White After Labor Day

Yes, You Can Wear White After Labor Day, and you should as long as the weather matches your outfit.

wear white after Labor Day

When it is above 70 degrees, I will wear white jeans and, please don’t judge me too harshly, sandals too!

►► Go by the temperature and the skies when you choose what to wear.

Imagine how hot and silly looking it is to be wearing Uggs, on the first day of school? Imagine it is 90 degrees outside and no A.C. in the building. Just ask my daughter, who wouldn’t take my advice a few years back. She couldn’t get home fast enough to pull those suckers off her feet and store them away till it was cold outside, many, many weeks later.

Oh hell yeah, she listens to me now.

wear white after Labor Day
I have no words for his choice to wear Uggs with this outfit. Maybe, just got caught up in a trend?

►► Don’t let outdated and silly fashion guidelines keep you from being comfortable and happy.

Here I am talking about how YES, you can wear white after LaborDay.

This article, by John Surico, for The Village Voice, gives a few descriptions of how the whole craziness of no you cannot wear white after Labor Day, nonsense started. I especially find the Gilded Age explanation the most fascinating and believable.

How To Get Rid Of Hanger Bumps

Here’s How To Get Rid Of Hanger Bumps.

Don’t you hate how some clothes look like they have bumps in them and stick up and out on your shoulders?

Follow these tips to rid yourself of hanger bumps.

How To Get Rid Of Hanger Bumps

Going thru the clothes in your closet, you might some of your clothes a bit lumpy on the shoulders if they were not hung properly.

This shoulder shaper from Ikea will fit over the slim hangers I recommend in my closet organizing guide, despite Ikea saying they are for their hangers.

How To Get Rid Of Hanger Bumps

These shoulder shapers will also be great for your coats and jackets, which sadly we will all be wearing soon…too soon, and hopefully without hanger bumps.

And The Survey Says….

women want their arms covered

Yup, I’m stuck on arms, or perhaps I’m up in arms about, well arms.

Let me tell you what a challenge it is to find clothes that cover up arms, when shopping in June, July and August. It’s hard…very hard.

Yet, I manage to find the clothes that have sleeves or some great toppers that can be taken off in the event the AC stops working, or a hot flash rears its hot headed head.

In my private Stop Stressing About Dressing Face Book group, which I do invite you to join, I created a survey. which was naturally about arms.

I asked:
When shopping with a client, the topic of exposing her arms often dictates the tops & dresses I find for her. So this made me curious:

Where do you stand on having your arms covered?

                       The Survey Says:

50% Depends upon the temperature?
25% As I’ve aged I prefer a 3/4 sleeve which enhances the slenderness of my arms.
16% No way will I ever go sleeveless?
9%  I’ve never given it a thought.

The answers actually surprised me, as most of my clients from size 4 to 18, won’t show their arms. Even when, and I swear, their arms look absolutely perfect!

BIG TIP: Do not wear short or cap sleeves,
as they typically make the arms look wider.

Here are two of the toppers, I like to suggest to cover up arms for my clients & still keep them cool.

Nic +Zoe 4 way cardigan

Yes, they are both available at Nordstroms, as well as at other retailers in store  or on-line.

So, where do YOU stand on wearing sleeveless tops and dresses?

Want To Change The Shape Of Your Face?

I’ve had clients stop thinking they needed surgery on their chins, when I showed them how a certain neckline and/or necklace dramatically reduces the double chin.

Or how the shape & color of her earrings accentuates cheekbones and eyes.

Play around with necklines, scarves, and jewelry and take notice of the subtle changes that truly transform facial features and shapes.
You’ll see that you actually can change the shape of your face.
It is an illusion, but very effective.

The clothes I select and the outfits I create for my clients are always chosen with care, and if you want to know how to do the same for yourself you could read my book, work with me virtually, personally or attend my workshop in Ridgefield CT. on September 16.

YOU Don’t Have To
Take Your Clothes Off!!!

Have you seen the buzz on FaceBook about the unique styling event I created for up to only 10 women who are tired of never knowing what to wear?

Are You Also Fed Up With Body Shaming?

 body shaming
Body Shaming is wrong!

I never knew how much Jennifer Aniston and I had in common.

Oh, not that the paparazzi follow me around and endlessly comment on my looks, or because I am a celebrity and the world just can’t get enough of me.

But how we both are fed up with the unrealistic, unfair, and unkind judgments women are subjected to over and over again. We share the belief that Body Shaming has got to stop, and speaking up is one way to make that happen.

Women are constantly getting the message from magazine and TV celebrity profiles, that anything resembling a ‘normal’ body shape should be labeled as fat or pregnant.

Yeah, people, we ladies have tummies, fatty deposits all over our bodies, and skin not as tight as it once was, which in all honesty is NORMAL!

I love what Jennifer Aniston wrote for the Huffington Post:

“For the record, I am not pregnant,”.  “What I am is fed up.”

“I resent being made to feel ‘less than’ because my body is changing and/or I had a burger for lunch and was photographed from a weird angle and therefore deemed one of two things: ‘pregnant’ or ‘fat,’ ” she continued to write.

So let me tell you how I really do have something in common with the rightfully fed-up actress.

When I was in my 20’s, I booked a massage as a treat, after a long and grueling 3 day business retreat.

Keeping in mind that I weighed about 20 pounds less than I do now, my body shape was pretty darn close to Jennifer Aniston’s.

Upon entering the spa, my masseuse asked me, “Do you know if you are having a boy or a girl?”

Once I collected myself, I responded with “I’m having a burger with fries.”

Body Shaming

See, I told you Jennifer Anniston and I had a lot in common.

FYI We also both attended The Performing Arts High School, as in the 1980 film Fame, just not at the same time. Her acting career went just a bit further than mine.

“Scarlett has provided me with a completely new vision for how I dress. After working with her remotely, I was armed with the knowledge I needed to let go of clothes and accessories that didn’t serve (or flatter) me any longer. I have transformed from the person who walks out of stores empty handed or worse with the wrong silhouettes and colors purchased, into someone who has a clear vision for what works and what I need to pull together outfits. Scarlett is a joy to work with and her recommendations were spot on.”

Above is what a virtual styling client said after working with me.

What Are You Saying With Your Clothes?

What Are You Saying With Your Clothes?
What Are You Saying With Your Clothes?

When Seth Godin speaks, people listen. Especially those in business, as his words are so darn wise and thought-provoking.

In one of his many insightful posts, he spoke about the signals we send, by what we do, say, and in my area of expertise, wear.

He mentions that many people have trouble sending the signal that they would like to send.

Which makes me ask; what message does what you wear and how you wear it, send to your current and/or prospective clients, management, and yes, even on first dates?

If you are looking to work with high-end clients, but your outfits and coordinating lack of confidence are sending the signal of just getting by, you won’t be gaining the attention of those with money to spend and invest.

If you are a nutritionist, but your clothes hug you in the wrong places because they are simply the wrong size and style for you, then prospective clients won’t trust that you can help them look and feel healthy.

If you specialize in coaching others to grow their businesses, but look exhausted and over-worked simply because you are wearing the wrong colors and clothes, then potential clients won’t believe that you can help them improve their lives and careers.

If you are sending the wrong or perhaps even no signal, then please ask yourself why, and then do something about it. Please don’t keep putting off sending the right signals to yourself and others.

So, What Are You Saying With Your Clothes?

See below for shameless self-promotion.

A simple way to start choosing the right clothes is by following the easy-to-follow and transformative tips in my book, Stop Stressing About Dressing.

Warning: Be prepared to laugh while you learn, and know how to easily and stylishly send the right signals with your clothes.

What Are You Saying With Your Clothes?

Take a look at the reviews of my book on Amazon.  All 5 Stars, so If I were a restaurant, people would be standing in line to get in! Just saying.

How To Pose For Photographs…NOT!

How To Pose For Photographs or more like, How NOT To Pose For Photographs.

Clearly I am in an upper arm kick these days, but when I saw this photo of my chicken leg arm wrapped around my son, who was all dressed up for his Prom, I felt compelled to tell you the following.

NEVER hold your arm across your or your beloved son’s body!! I mean never.

How To Pose For PhotographsI went running after my husband and begged him and my sick and tired of having his photo taken son, for a re-do.

This time I tucked my chicken leg arm behind me, and created more of a wing shape, which was a big improvement in my eyes. Besides, I’ve never been a big fan of chicken legs.

I realize that I have not mentioned what is most probably what you really want to now, so here you go.

Our dog is named Charlie and he is a Lakeland Terrier. He always knows how to pose.

Be sure to subscribe to get my posts that will not only entertain but also help you walk into a room feeling confident and beautiful. No kidding!
