What Does A Stay at A Hotel and Suede Have In Common?

How to Care for Suede

Today’s TIP: How to Care for Suede

So what does a stay at a hotel and suede have in common?

You’ll have to watch the video below to find out how you can spruce up your suede shoes, boots, belts and bags after a stay at a hotel.

How to Care for Suede

“Scarlett is a brilliant Image Stylist. She understands not only what looks good on her clients but how those clothes interact with daily life and can be an extension of brand. It was so incredible to arrive at my dressing room and find it fully loaded. I will never EVER look through racks of clothes again. What she saved me in knowing where to find the great sales (and when to pay full price) covered her fee alone. Even if that wasn’t the case she would be worth every penny. I highly recommend Scarlett!” PattyLennon.com

Was It The Best Compliment?

How to get a compliment

“OMG, I LOVE your scarf.”

“Ohhhh, what a great necklace.”

“Great shoes.”

If you only get compliments on a part of an outfit, let’s say shoes, scarf or necklace, then there is room for you to improve your entire outfit.

If however, you make the shoes or accessories, then you received a compliment that turns into business for your product; bravo!!

What you deserve and should get are wow,  “you look great” comments.

Looking, and by the way feeling, great literally goes from head to toe.

Sure getting a compliment on an accessory or other part of your outfit is fantastic and feels really, really good, but don’t think that is the best than you can do or look.

How to get a compliment

Strive for a combination of “nice shoes” with a smatter of “wow, you look great!”

YOU deserve, and can, look beautiful, confident and great, every single day!

I love showing my clients how to feel beautiful, professional and current –

no matter their size or age!

TIME SENSITIVE OFFER: Want to know how to get a compliment so you can look and feel beautiful, confident and great, every single day? If you do, then let’s set up 15 minutes for us to talk, for FREE. Email me at Scarlett@ScarlettImage.com, while I have the openings to talk.

TIP: An easy, quick and mind altering way to look and feel better is by wearing a proper fitting bra. Check out these good and well, interesting bra care tips from The Three Tomatoes. However, I think the one about wearing your bra while showering is a bit, um, extreme.

How to get a compliment

Read my tips on what a proper fitting bra can do for your image and self-confidence. You don’t want to be like Drew Barrymore, who recently declared that how she looked below, is one of her top what was I thinking wardrobe disasters.

Skeleton In Your Closet?

Skeleton In Your Closet

A friend of mine, let’s call her Phyllis; decided she wanted to ‘crash’ her grown son’s Halloween party. Oh, but what to be and wear?

Phyllis uses a cane on occasion for an old back injury, and chose it as her inspiration to attend her son’s soiree as an elderly Grandmother, visiting from her home in Boca Raton, Florida.

Naturally, she thought that she would need to go shopping at a thrift shop or Good Will, to find the pieces to create an outfit that would convey the stereotype of an older woman who hasn’t updated her wardrobe or style in a very, very long time.

Skeleton In Your Closet

She dug through racks of clothing and found a gold lame blouse circa 1975 Saturday Night Fever, with a giant pointy collar, and a shimmer reminiscent of a 50s Christmas tree decked with tinsel.

Skeleton In Your ClosetPerfect!

Next, she scoured boxes of costume jewelry and came up with oversized gaudy, sparkly earrings that were so wrong, yet so right for her costume creation.

On the night of the party, she donned her faaaabulous finds, drew on exaggerated eyebrows, applied lipstick as though her eyes were closed, hunched over and stood in front of her mirror, completely satisfied with her over the top ensemble. She was delightfully unrecognizable and completely dressed to invite stares and laughter and even the admiration of her son for her disguise.

Just one little twist to this story: Phyllis never did need to leave her home to find her costume. Surprisingly, she had all she needed where she lived!

Those racks she scoured were in her spare bedroom and the boxes of unworn jewelry were in her bedroom drawers.

The lesson to learn is that if you can create a costume from your own old and unworn clothing and accessories, there is clearly something spooky going on in your home. It is time to review and remove the clothes that really should be donated to Good Will and clean out the cob webs made out of your threads.

Note: This is a true story and not a scary campfire tale.

If I scared you with this spooky tale, I apologize. Having clothes that no longer fit or look good on you in your closet is very scary because you are losing out on easily finding what to wear plus knowing what you actually have in there.

Get your closet organized and stop being terrified to open it, with your copy of my Closet Organizing Guide.

Organizing Systems For Your Whole Family

I confess: I am an organizing junkie.
So much so that I am often referred to as a
closet organizer, which I am NOT.

organizing systems

organizing systems

organizing systems

My client’s closets are always more organized after working with me, because the contents are only the clothes that look good on them, plus I arrange her clothes using my organizing systems.
After hearing lots of buzz about the Japanese professional organizer Marie Kondo, I wanted, well I had to read her book,  The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing.

Turns out her decluttering or in her words tidying, suggestions for clothes are what I have been using with my clients for almost 10 years. If only I had written them down in a book form, I would already have been on the New York Time’s best seller list. My Closet Organizing System is a mini version of her book in regard to what clothes to keep, and how to hang them plus I show how to store shoes, which she doesn’t.
Sadly Marie Kondo’s book has no photos, and it is hard to duplicate organizing systems without some visuals.

You can get my system in my online course Dress Without Stress.

The best tip from her book and one I used immediately was her method of folding clothes that are stored in drawers. I was in such a hurry to use her file folding technique, that I forgot to take before pictures.

I used this system for my son’s T-Shirts and my drawer that has special scarves/wraps along with my nightgowns. I did not fold all very carefully, but these 2 drawers took me less than 10 minutes to refold. Now there is more room in each drawer and it is so much easier to see the contents. Imagine how great these items would look if I folded them carefully.

Using this file system, it is so easy to see what you have and add more space to your drawers. You can watch this video to learn how to fold t-shirts using the Kon Mari method.

AH-Headshot-150x150“I was amazed at how much value Scarlett provided me in our virtual consultation. Not only did she quickly grasp the clothes that looked like “me” from just a series of photographs, but she picked up on colors and combinations which were not in the photos but I personally liked and encouraged me to use them more because they enhanced my features. Scarlett also gave me the reinforcement to understand why some items looked better on me than others. Then to top it off she provided a comprehensive list of examples I could instantly add to my wardrobe. In 2 hours I went from uncertain to confident with a new batch of clothes that really work for me on the way.”  Allison Hartsoe Digital Analytics Expert Organize Everything Digital Marketing Consulting Partner

Stop Digging In Your Heels!

Save your shoes!!!

shoes for outdoor wedding

When warmer weather arrives, so do outdoor events.

Weddings, garden parties, graduation ceremonies, and any other event that is being held outside presents a problem for a woman: What shoes can she wear that won’t dig into the grass and ruin her heels?

While shopping with a client and her future daughter-in-law, for the perfect dress (we found two) to wear to her son’s wedding, we headed to the shoe department. She needed shoes for outdoor wedding.

I wanted to find her a pair of shoes that will be comfortable, attractive and could be worn for other occasions as well. And I did.

But that wasn’t what I wanted to share with you.

Her adorable and absolutely lovely daughter-in-law to be, discovered this product in Nordstrom’s shoe department. I think it is a brilliant solution to the damage that can occur to shoes, when your heels sink into the lawn.

You can purchase the heel protectors separately, or get the Wedding Rescue Kit, which make s a fantastic gift to the Bridal Party.

The individual heel protectors comes in 4 colors and three widths, so as to fit a variety of heel sizes and colors.

How To Pack Up Your Winter Clothes

How To Pack Up Your Winter Clothes

Out with the cold, and in with the new and warm weather clothes.

Many women switch out the contents of their closets when the seasons change. Up to the attic, down to the basement, or in a spare bedroom’s closet will soon go, and not soon enough, all the cold weather clothes.

In the March 2015 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine there is a tip to use bundling to pack up clothes for storage.  However, if you have been reading my posts, you know that for years I have been using bundling for packing my carry-on, and only, suitcase when traveling.

Truthfully, every women should not need to switch out her closet, no matter what the size as she really needs far fewer clothes than she realizes. If you want to know what clothes you should be keeping, wearing and buying, I will be happy to have a 15 minute call with you, at no charge.

Contact me if you want to take advantage of my gift and time.

Here is a video, I created years ago showing step by step, how I packed for a week-long trip.

This chart from OneBag.com provides easy to follow bundling directions.

The Today Show Featured My Services

steps to organize your bedroom closet

Exciting isn’t it?

Okay, to be truthful it was not I showing what I do when I work with a client in her home, it was Today contributor,  Jill Martin. The messy and disorganized closet belonged to the charming reporter Hoda Kotb, who is also the co-host of the 4th hour of the Today Show with Kathie Lee Gifford.

Hoda already had a reputation on the Today Show of being somewhat of a pack-rat, so it was not much of a surprise to me when I saw her closet on their closet chaos feature.

So how lucky am I that a major news network had two segments in the same day perfectly explaining and depicting 50% of what my clients receive when working with me?

The other 50% and far more important benefit my clients receive, are all the new outfits I create using the clothes they should keep and the list of what they need purchase to create a complete and flattering wardrobe.

Be patient and wait for the brief NBC ad to end before you can see each of the short clips. It’s worth it.

Organizing tools segment has some great tips, although I feel mine are much better and more extensive. For example I have a tip that would make it a lot easier to keep those sweatshirts Hoda refers to, from toppling over on her closet’s shelf.

steps to organize your bedroom closet“To be truthful, I wasn’t sure I needed Scarlett’s services, but I knew that I wanted to recommend her to my clients and before I did that I had to try it myself first.  I was wrong. I didn’t realize the value of having someone take the time to go through my wardrobe, point out the good, bad and yes some ugly.  The really fun part was creating brand new outfits from the clothes I already owned.  Scarlett was patient, funny and while I was flinging clothes around the bedroom she color coded my closet so everything was SO easy to find.  We also matched each outfit to jewelry that I had that had been sitting idol.  Just by changing the jewelry it gave each outfit a brand new feel.  Most importantly Scarlett was helping me fit my clothes to my personality and step away from what I thought I should be wearing.  Sometimes you don’t know the value of something until you have tried it and this definitely fits that category for me!” —Deborah Shimer Desire On Fire

How To Care For Sweaters That Pill

sweaters that pill

Sweaters are being taken out of their Summer spots from closets and drawers ready for their cool weather debut……or are they? Does yours have the unfortunate clothing affliction of Pilling?

Don’t risk looking cheap.

Sweaters that pill, will make one that costs as much as $200, look like it came out of a dollar bin. The finest cashmere or far less expensive acrylics all have the potential to become sweaters that pill, therefore looking sloppy and cheap.

Take a close look at your wooly companions, and check for pilling sweaters.

Nubby sweaters look, well shabby.

Buzz the heck out of those fluffy bumps with a fabric shaver like this one from Walmart. These shavers remove the offending pills, without damaging the sweater and are like a makeover for your pilling sweaters making them look good as new.

Two Products You Should Know About

women networking

Here are two products that make me feel like Arnold Horshack on Welcome Back Kotter, saying, “ooo, ooo, ooo”.

As many of you know, part of being an entrepreneur is attending lots and lots of networking events. They are crucial if you want both your personal and business life to grow and flourish.

Not only have I made dear friends, connected with many, many wonderful future clients, but I also discover some of the coolest products that women have created for women.

Last week I attended a wonderful dinner in NYC hosted by Running With Heels and Ellevate, formerly known as 85 Broads, and met two inspiring women entrepreneurs.

women networking

The first, Cassandra, created a genius product that is lightweight and easily portable. It is PYSIS, The Posh Galosh – overboots Protect Your Shoes… and arrive In Style, whatever the weather.

When I think of all the times I had to rethink my outfit just so I could avoid wearing nice shoes in torrential rain, or slushy snow. Sometimes I literally got wet feet before arriving at events,  and I really wish I had already owned a pair of PYSIS. And, ‘to boot’, they can be folded to fit inside a bag. Great for traveling and will also fit into my carry-on suitcase.

Check out this video to see them in action.

The second amazing woman I met, Tanea, founded She’s Got Papers, a line of unique and fun stationary.  I love that Tanea’s tagline is’ “say it the write way.” A hand written note is still the best way to show you care, and hers are clever and one of a kind.

See Tanea’s inspiring story on becoming an entrepreneur here.

I bought two sets of cards that are perfect for me to send to my clients. Peruse the cards and see if you can guess which ones I ordered.

“Prior to working with Scarlett, I had been shopping at the same store for many years, buying the same conservative styles in multiple colors, and not always wearing the most flattering colors, jewelry, or styles.  During my virtual style consultation, Scarlett expertly evaluated my current outfits and showed me how making very small changes such as wearing a different pair of earrings, adding a belt, or raising a hemline by a couple of inches can make all the difference.  I was amazed!  Scarlett also gently encouraged me to leave my “style comfort zone” and suggested some fashionable, affordable styles online that would highlight my petite frame and add a youthful, yet professional element to my wardrobe.  I’m grateful for Scarlett’s suggestions and am so excited to try some new styles!”
