“Scarlett is a pleasure to work with. She’s professional, knowledgeable, and fun! I loved playing dress-up with her guidance. She arrived with a bag of tricks, ready to work in my closet to prune, create, tweak, and suggest wardrobe additions. By the time she left, I had a small pile of clothes to donate, an understanding of my most flattering styles, many outfit options, and a shopping list for wardrobe enhancements. She followed up by emailing the photos she took of all the outfits we had created (accessories and all), which will make getting dressed and packing for trips much simpler. Don’t even question whether or not to hire her. Just do it! Scarlett has a great eye, is creative, understands clothing and different body types, and is really fun to work with. You will come away with clarity and confidence.” – L.S.

“I began working with wardrobe stylist Scarlett in the Spring of 2013. The first thing she did was to take me shopping in my wardrobe. I can tell you this was the last thing I wanted to do. However, it was fun and I was thrilled to see that Scarlett could come up with 30 “new” outfits! We then went shopping because I needed some special outfits for events that I had coming up. I asked Scarlett to design an outfit around a pin that my mother-in-law had given me. She did it. I was thrilled with the outfits she chose. I was even happier that I did not need to spend a fortune on them and even happier that each time I wear them, I get a compliment.” Kathy McShane

Styling Tip – Don’t Wear Tight Clothes

wardrobe stylist tips

Sometimes it takes a great comedy show to make the point of the hazards of wearing clothes that are too tight.

On an older episode of ABC’s Modern Family, sultry Gloria, played by Sofia Vergara, is in denial that her body is getting bigger as her pregnancy progresses. Until her shirt explodes open and her pants seam splits, she had not accepted that she is no longer the same size as before being pregnant.

The scene was hysterical, but it also pokes fun at those that really no longer are aware that they might be wearing the wrong size. We’ve all been there, but it is important to not go there again.

One of my styling tips is to avoid wearing clothes that are too tight because instead of making a woman look younger and thinner, she actually looks older and heavier.

It’s not about the size. It’s only about the right fit.

“You don’t have to wear 5 inch heals or lose 25 pounds at weight watchers, just spend one hour with Scarlett, and you will lose ten pounds and grow at least 4 inches. When she gives you the tools to work with and casts her spell on you, you gain a feeling of confidence you never know you had. Trust me, it happened to me, and it will happen to you”. ~ S.B. Need A Fashion Intervention?

Don’t let this be your closet!Fashion Intervention

Sometimes it is best to let the customer have the last word. Today, I felt she should have the first word as well, as Diane explains her results of working with me so well!

“After a presentation by Scarlett, at our Professional Organizers meeting, I offered myself up for an intervention with my all black clothes and accessory filled closet. It has been all-black for over 30 years! As a New Yorker, black is the uniform color, and I felt safe wearing it all the time.

Eight to 10 of us had an intervention party complete with hors d’oeuvres and  lots of wine (for me).  First, Scarlett analyzed my colors and I was ecstatic and relieved that black was still a color that complimented me, but she showed me how I can add many other colors to make my outfits “pop”!   So after years of 20 pairs of black pants, 15 black skirts, black suits…. I have since bought color accessories, blouses and pieces to mix up my all-black.   Now when I come to work in color, I receive more compliments than ever.”
Thanks Scarlett!!

Wardrobe Stylist Gives Fashion & Styling Tip

Wardrobe Stylist Gives Fashion & Styling Tip. You Bet Your Sweet Dickeys!

Remember dickeys? Well, after you stop laughing at their ridiculous name, take a look at these styles, and imagine how creatively you can change the look of a simple sweater cardigan and jacket.
Cecetoppings.com makes these wonderful dickeys that range from $30 to $44 each.

Imagine how comfortable it would be to wear these under sweaters and jackets compared to traditional, and sometimes boring layering. It also will make you feel less overheated as you would when wearing only one layer.

Less bulk, more style. Perfect!

“I’m the first one to tell people, when they compliment me on how I look, that I have a secret weapon: Scarlett Debease. I’ve worked with Scarlett for years now and recommend her heartily to family, friends and colleagues. She not only shops with me for beautiful pieces to add to my wardrobe, but she also comes to my home and coordinates the new purchases with the rest of my wardrobe, then photographs the outfits to create my own personal look-book. I NEVER have to think, “What will I wear today?” I simply consult my look-book and get dressed. I know I’ve saved time and money using Scarlett’s invaluable service.”

How To Pack A Suitcase for A Week in a Carry-On: Part 2

how to pack a suitcase for a week

How To Pack A Suitcase for A Week in a Carry-On.

One of the tips I shared with you in my last post, was that each piece of clothing must be able to be worn at least 2 different ways. That guideline works for the accessories you bring as well, including handbags, jewelry, scarves and shoes.

Here is what I brought with me

how to pack a suitcase for a week

Shoes

Three pairs of shoes. 2 low heeled sandals and 1 pair of sneakers but they are not the kind you wear to the gym. Mine are black suede, and yes they can get wet. When I wear mine with jeans, they almost disappear. I only brought shoes that I can do lots of walking in, but you can pack heels to substitute for one flat pair if your trip is more business than touring.

Handbags

One handbag is really all you need, and mine was a bright blue which went with EVERY outfit! It had enough room for keys, cell phones, cameras, IPAD, business cards, makeup, etc. I didn’t bring all those things, but you might.

Scarves

One patterned scarf that went with almost every single outfit. I love scarves, and like how they can add some pop and pizazz to a simple outfit.

Jewelry

Two necklaces. One blue and silver, the other brown/cream.
One silver watch.
One multi strand bracelet with brown, black and cream colors.
One silver hoop pairing of earrings, that I can change the ball drop to three different colors.

Stat tuned for How To Pack A Suitcase for A Week in a Carry-On Part 3, when I show some of the different outfits that can be created with very few clothes.

Color Matters, but What Are You Doing About It?

Color matters, so never underestimate the importance and impact of color in your clothes, accessories and makeup.

You may have a gorgeous wardrobe, but if it is mostly black, then you likely will disappear into the crowd, which really should never be your goal if you are looking for success and growth for your business and career.

In this article in Psychology Today, that I was asked to contribute to about the importance of not blending in and becoming almost invisible, you can get more advice on how to not get invisible.

You should aim for being positively noticed for your talents and accomplishment, and the colors you wear affect that outcome. Also keep in mind that always wearing black may show a lack of creativity and confidence, neither of which are helpful for your self-esteem or career.

If you are applying your makeup the same way you have for years, then you are missing out on using color in your makeup to improve your appearance and look current. You don’t need a lot of makeup and certainly less than you wore in your 20s, but you should at the very least wear mascara and lipstick.

Use COLOR, to help you get your wardrobe and makeup working for you, and not against you.

C- Create a look that works for your own individual look and style
O- Open up your mind to try new looks.
L– Less clothes & lighter makeup.
O– Organize your clothes and makeup.
R– Review and remember what you own and how well it works for you.
