Time To Know How To Wear Skinny Pants for Women Over 40

Time To Know How To Wear Skinny Pants

Back a few years ago, I would not wear skinny pants simply because I looked terrible in them. Tops were typically designed to be cropped and the skinny pants were made so tight, that tools were practically required to pry my body in or out of them.

But then fashion designers heard the cries of women all over the world, as they wiggled their way out of their skinny pants, and added lycra to them so women would no longer need to go to extremes to get in and out of their skinny pants.

Around the same time, cropped tops were being replaced with longer tops. Perhaps designers actually noticed that most women over the age of 30 were tired of pulling down their shirts so has not to expose their belly buttons.

Now, I knew how to wear skinny pants and show many of my clients how to do so as well.

Here are some of my tips on how to wear skinny pants, no mater what age or size a woman may be:

1. Curvy, hippy or wider in the middle shapes women should wear tops that stop just below the widest part of your hips.
2. Straight body shapes can wear tops that meet the waistline or all the way down to to the hips. See below, how one of my clients looks fabulous in the right pair of skinny pants in one of these before and after pictures from ScarlettImage.com

3. Skinny pants can be worn tucked into boots, with flats or heels. Personally, I love wearing skinny pants with boots.

The photos on the top of this post are from a How To Wear skinny jeans feature, with great tips by Adam Glassman, in the February 2013 issue of Oprah magazine.

“I just wanted to thank you for helping me complete my life ‘transformation’. Meeting you and working with you has been extraordinary and I am extremely grateful! After a divorce, and then working at a new and hugely stressful full time nursing management job, caring for my “special” son, and my daughter’s wedding… I began the journey to improve my health. I lost 40 pounds, and 1 1/2 years later left my job to pursue my fabulous new health coaching business. All that is great and I can hardly believe how fortunate I have been to have this opportunity.
My walk in closet, however, was like a scary haunted house!
I decided that YOU would be my birthday gift to myself… BEST GIFT EVER!!
You came to my house for hours and organized my closet, while I tried on loads and loads of clothes! You helped me donate 4 HUGE (GASP!) bags of clothes and accessories, and then created amazing outfits with what was left. Life changing right there!
…. and then the best part! A shopping spree at Nordstroms (birthday gift continues…). You had wonderful things hanging and waiting for me. You helped me choose the most flattering clothes for my new size, my
coloring, and all areas of my life..
I now have a fabulous, neat, organized closet, thanks to you and your GUIDE, and I am now able to choose outfits in less than 2 minutes (including accessories!).
Scarlett, you are amazing and I am grateful that we met, and that now I feel like my transformation is complete.” —Miriam Kahn Take Shape For Life

Wardrobe Style Consultations for Women Around The World

style consultationsClient Spotlight

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. Ain’t no valley low enough, to keep me away from you…….That is if you are one of my virtual style consultation clients.

Here is a photo of executive coach Silvia Pencak, who lives in Canada. She hired me to give her a virtual style consolation so she would get personalized style tips and suggest which clothes she should buy for an upcoming photo shoot, speaking events, and plain old everyday life.

Silvia is an extremely successful businesswoman, who struggled with how to look her best and was somewhat uncomfortable trying new looks. She knew that her wardrobe was not properly reflecting her talents, creativity, success and was ready to find out why and how to know what to wear.

Once I received the info I needed to access what colors, styles, and fit would be the most flattering for Silvia, I went to work on my computer.

I created a list of very specific tips as to what her best colors, proportions of clothes, necklines, accessories, and so much more. Then I went shopping in Canada by going online. I found dresses that would make her look like the star she is, along with jewelry, tops, skirts, and pants that cause her to radiate confidence and success.

She was not sure my selections and suggestions would look good on her as they were not things she has tried before, but she trusted me and ordered the items I recommended.  The clothes arrived and Silvia LOVED them.

These two photos are from her photo shoot and I see a beautiful and confident woman, don’t you?

Warning: Your Waist May Be Larger Than It Appears

leggings are not pantsEver look at the tiny words on your car’s side view mirror and note the warning: Objects in mirror, are closer than they appear?

Something similar can be said for our waists and bottoms if you wear, on a regular basis, elastic waist bottoms typically know as leggings, as you may be larger than you think you appear.

Whaaaaaat, you ask? Well, when  women, and I have been guilty of this as well, wear bottoms that can easily expand as we expand, we don’t really notice how much closer our ‘objects’ are to not fitting into our clothes as well as they used to or should.

Sometimes, it is a huge shock, no pun intended, when we try to put on a regular pair of pants, and there is no way we can zip them up!

Keep in mind that leggings are not pants, and only should be worn under very long tops. Other than the gym, no letting your tush show, please. It really isn’t that flattering , and can actually be comically disturbing as in these photos.

Long tops and expanding pants leave way too much room for ‘error’, so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Now I need to try my pants on, but first I think I’ll head to the gym.

What Not To Wear From Weddings To Work

Wedding Dress, Worn Once By Mistake

I was recently at a party and told the story of the best for sale ad I have ever read. For Sale: Wedding Dress Worn Once By Mistake. Recalling this creative, funny and telling advertisement, gave me the idea to ask if you ever wore something by mistake too?

I must admit, that I also once wore a wedding dress by mistake a few decades ago, but enough about me.

Sandy Weiner of Last first Date, forwarded me a great blog post titled What Not To Wear by Arielle Ford on her blog, The Soulmate Secret.

Ms. Ford shared that she received a great life lesson years ago about choosing to always look her best by only wearing clothes that made her look and feel great. She was once asked if she has A, B, and C clothes, with A being her favorite and what she looked and felt great in. Her advisor suggested she should only wear A clothes, so as to not just look good, but feel good.

What you choose to wear totally effects how you and others see yourself, let alone the major boost to ones’s self-esteem. My clients,  Stop Stressing About Dressing workshop and speaking presentation attendees, know that I always stress to be dressed in flattering and confidence boosting clothes, so they are prepared for any opportunity anywhere and at anytime.

You can meet your next best client, employer, friend, true love, you name it, when you least expect it. So why not look and feel as fantastic as possible?

About 6 years ago, I attended a women’s business luncheon because Jane Pollak was the speaker. I had heard her speak on  a tele-seminar for professional image consultants, and I just had to hear more of her business advice for entrepreneurs and hopefully get to meet her as well.

I found Jane before she was to speak, and introduced myself to her and naturally bought her book,  Soul Proprietor: 101 Lessons from a Lifestyle Entrepreneur.

Jane hired me about one month later as she loved what I was wearing, and I cannot even count the number of clients she has referred to me since our first wardrobe styling and shopping days.

Here is the jacket I wore, that to this day Jane still remembers. This was a photo shoot for my first website, back in 2006 when I was only providing makeup application services..

Please share below, what you may have worn by mistake, or better yet: what you wore when you met a person that changed your life for the better.

Why Wearing Jeans May Be Over

why wearing jeans may be over

I’ve noticed I have not worn my jeans that much, if at all this fall and winter, and Erica M. Blumenthal showed me that I am not alone, in her piece for the January 15, 2014 New York Times Fashion & Style page: Even Jeans Need a Break Once in a While, Shopping for New Pants That Act Like Jeans.

To be fair, I have needed to wear pants that can tuck into my knee-hi waterproof boots, as it has been a miserably cold, snowy and icy winter here in the NorthEast and since I do not wear skinny jeans, my traditional straight and trouser shaped jeans have been temporarily abandoned, although not forgotten.

Why wearing jeans may be over, is apparent by simply taking a look at other women around and you will see that most women are wearing casual style pants, that are comfortable as they typically have some stretch to them and can easily be dressed up or down.

The danger in this trend, is what I wrote about on my post leggings are not pants, and without realizing it, was a hint that wearing jeans may be over…..for now.

Instead of wearing leggings or elastic waist pants, look for styles that have waists, buttons and zippers like that of structured pants, as seen on the photo below for White house Black Market.

why wearing jeans may be over

With a style like these, you can get away with more of your rear showing, as you are wearing real pants as opposed to leggings or heaven forbid tights.

If your hips are fairly narrow, you can wear a regular top, and if they are wider,  put on a top that stops just below your widest area on your hips.

These pants will transition easily from cold weather dressing to warm. Substitute your boots with ballet style and/or a heel, and the look goes from casual to dressed up in an instant.

How about you? Are you wearing your jeans less too. Please post your comment below, and let me know what kind of casual pants you have been wearing lately.

How To Shop In your Closet – Step 3

Wardrobe Stylist
How To Shop In your Closet – Step 3

Does this style of clothing look familiar? Perhaps you even have a few pieces in your own closet? Have no fear, because you are not alone. Almost all of my wardrobe styling client’s have clothes from the 80’s and/or 90’s, and each one wonders if they are the only ones that do. As entertaining as the 80’s and 90’s were in terms of fashion, there truly are very few, if any, pieces that one should save and continue to wear other than for a theme party.

Pretty much all of your clothes should have been bought in a year starting with a 2, and those are the only pieces you should be wearing and have hanging in your closet.  I am not talking about wearable vintage pieces, but the things that are simply taking up space in your closet and drawers and not allowing you to clearly see what you have that is wearable and flattering for you to choose from when putting outfits together.

Take some time to pull out of your closet the clothes that are keeping you in the past. Not only do they age you unnecessarily, but they also keep you from seeing what you have and need.

How To Hide Upper Arm Flabbiness – video

Close to 90% of my clients hate their upper arms and dread wearing sleeveless tops and formal dresses. Below and in the video above, you can get some of my thoughts and solutions to your right to bare arms.

  1. Look for loosely knitted cotton type fabric shrugs, cardigans, or other pieces that can be worn over sleeveless tops and dresses. The loose weave will make them airy and comfortable in warmer weather. Some department stores have these in their scarf and accessory departments.
  1. Ask sales associates to show you clothes that have short sleeves, and if they don’t, ask to speak to the manager and let him or her know that the selection does not have what you need. Just think about how well how the squeaky wheel theory will work in this instance.
  1. Scour the Internet searching for short sleeve tops and dresses. They are out there despite the fact that the stores might not have them in stock. Ex. Search for the blue dress, short sleeves, V-neck.
  1. Be sure that the sleeves, straps or armholes of your clothes are not too tight. This will avoid your upper body and arms from spilling over and giving the impression that there is more of you in places that actually exist.
  1. Distract yourself and others from your arms by wearing flattering, unusual, and/or whimsical necklaces. Lightly weaved scarves are another way to bring eyes and self-image away from your arms. If the scarf has enough fabric, you could even let it drape on your shoulders as another way to cover up and distract.

Here is an email I received from a new client that needed to update her wardrobe. The total cost for all, was approximately $700.

Hi Scarlett,

I just finished putting all of my new clothes away.  The grand total for today is:
3 pairs of pants
1 casual dress
1 formal dress
22 shirts
3 pairs of shoes
I’d call that a successful day!  Perhaps the most exciting part of the day for me was as I was leaving the store.  I walked past a shirt that caught my eye.  My first reaction was that stinks it’s not in “my” size, meaning the women’s department.  Then I actually paused and thought, no if it looks good on me I can do this shirt.  I was too tired to go back to the fitting room and had too many packages, but that was an entirely new thought process for me.  And next week sometime I will go back and try that shirt on!
So, thank you for your expertise and helping to educate me!”  K.F. Ct.

Wardrobe Stylist Fashion Makeover

I simply could not have explained the fashion makeover process of Mindy Kannon working with me, wardrobe stylist, better than she did herself.

Thank you Mindy for such a great blog post on our first two makeover appointments together.

I Am A Plain ol’ Jane!

By Mindy Kannon – Digestive Health Coach

They say that it only takes 3 seconds for someone to judge you by your looks.
Ouch!
I have never been one to care much about my looks.
I was cute enough.
My mom tells me that I was down-right adorable as a baby.

Wardrobe Stylist Fashion Makeover

I was never unhappy with how I looked and lucky enough to be okay looking.
But as I do more speaking engagements I am finding that I need to think about what to wear and the image I am trying to create!
Wow, that is a real big pain.
So recently I hired Scarlett DeBease. https://scarlettimage.com/
I was a little nervous I will admit.
She was coming into my house, my bedroom, my closet – oh boy!
I did do a little organizing so she could see what I owned.
When the day arrived, I was psyched at all she showed me.
First, we took a picture of me before:

Wardrobe Stylist Fashion Makeover

She showed me what colors looked good on me: brown vs back, gold vs silver jewelry and what neckline is best.
She then went through my closet and created outfits from the clothes that fit the criteria.

Wardrobe Stylist Fashion Makeover

I got rid of a ton of clothes and happy to do so – really happy.
I had a lot of stuff and it was always a little depressing that I had nothing to wear even though my closet was full.
She took a lot of pictures so I would remember the outfits.

Wardrobe Stylist Fashion Makeover

We then went shopping.
Okay here is one of the big revelations – I had a bra fitting – first time ever!
Wow! Was that an eye-opener.  I now have a bust-line in the correct place…hahahaha
I am small but it was definitely misaligned if you know what I mean.
We found lots of clothes that looked great and had fun doing it.
I can now walk into my closet and see outfits that I can grab and go with and feel confident that I look pretty good.
Confidence! My clothes now give me confidence!
Thanks, Scarlett,
Mindy
