Do You Have It?

professional image for women

Do You Have Presence?

Are you projecting a professional image?

There is more to having the right professional image for personal and business success than just wearing a great fitting pair of pants or looking like Wonder Woman. Although you should never underestimate the importance of donning the perfect fit, colors and styles that flatter you the most, remember also that presence is required.

Presence def: the impressive manner or appearance of a person.

A while back, I had the pleasure of hearing Kevin Carroll speak to a group of women entrepreneurs. Mr. Carroll is a professional speaker, trainer and facilitator. He teaches people how to be better problem solvers and how to get their messages across clearly, concisely and confidently.

When I heard him speak, he clearly communicated to the group the importance of not only the clothes you wear, but how your body language, tone and speed of your speech affects the message that you are sending to your superior, coworkers clients, family, and friends. The way you are perceived is key to how one finds success and happiness in all aspects of life.

Here are a few of the facts that Kevin Carroll shared with those of us who were fortunate enough to attend his presentation on Leadership Presence:

Others judge us within 20 seconds of meeting us.

In a job interview, 90% of the decision whether or not to hire is made within the first three minutes.

A study by Clairol found that companies projected salaries up to 20% higher based on a job applicant’s appearance.

How you say something is as important as what you say.

Power and status are established very early in any relationship. People judge us based upon their perception of us, and that is based upon the image we project (how we look, act and sound) which is directly related to our nonverbal behaviors. When we are perceived as being highly competent as well as highly likable, we maximize our ability to persuade, influence and lead.

Presenting your best image includes many aspects, such as how you dress, smile, shake hands, stand, and speak, eye contact and even your table manners. In other words, it takes the whole package to get the respect, job, salary, and interest of those you are trying to get to pay attention to you and the message you are sending out.

Your presence reflects who you are, and in business the image you project is your virtual resume and business card.

So how can you be sure that you are putting your best self forward? Begin by dressing in clothes that work for your personality, lifestyle and body shape. Notice how when you are dressed in flattering and well- fitting clothes that you start to not only look, but also feel more confident. You will then find yourself standing straighter, smiling brighter, speaking with a more confident voice, and sending out a very positive and welcoming message.

Perhaps you can try videotaping yourself speaking, or talk to yourself in the mirror, so you can see what type of presence you are projecting. Note how your clothes are fitting, how you are standing, speaking, hand movements, and where you eyes travel. Do you appear insubstantial or impressive? What do you see that can be improved?

Just by changing your wardrobe choices and posture, you can transform your current presence. As an Image Consultant, it is my job and mission to show my clients how they can improve how they look and feel, and nothing makes me happier than when I see how people’s eyes brighten when they like what they see in their mirror.

professional image for womenYou sell confidence – it is the result of working with you. I felt very confident today that I looked good. While how you look is not everything it is a huge part of what we say to the people we meet about who we are, what we do and how we feel about ourselves….You take the guess work out of that.” Mindy Kannon

Easy Way To Get The Right Fit For Tops and Dresses for Women Over 40 – Video

The Right Fit For Tops and Dresses

Don’t discard a top or dress from your closet or dressing room, until you see how this quick, simple and inexpensive alteration can give you the perfect fit.

Never underestimate the impact of using a tailor so you get the right fit for tops and dresses.

I cannot count the number of times I have shown a client how this simple adjustment transforms the fit and look from a top or dress. No more sides of a bra showing, straps falling, tanks tops needed, and more with this easy solution.

Go ahead, and look for a top in your closet that you don’t wear because of how too much of you peaks thru, and see what a difference just lifting up the straps will make.

Please share in the comment box below what top or dress you can transform with this alteration.

“Prior to working with Scarlett, I had been shopping at the same store for many years, buying the same conservative styles in multiple colors, and not always wearing the most flattering colors, jewelry, or styles.  During my virtual style consultation, Scarlett expertly evaluated my current outfits and showed me how making very small changes such as wearing a different pair of earrings, adding a belt, or raising a hemline by a couple of inches can make all the difference.  I was amazed!  Scarlett also gently encouraged me to leave my “style comfort zone” and suggested some fashionable, affordable styles online that would highlight my petite frame and add a youthful, yet professional element to my wardrobe.  I’m grateful for Scarlett’s suggestions and am so excited to try some new styles!”

I Did It Again – 1 Week In A Carry-On Bag

how to pack a carry-on bag

What! You only take a carry-on bag when you travel? How do you travel with just a carry-on bag?

I have been asked these questions over and over again, and have traveled with only a carry-on for many of my trips so I can experience the joy of walking off a plane, bypass luggage claim, and get my vacation or work started immediately.

My client, entrepreneurial women’s coach, Jane Pollak asked me to create outfits for her three-month long Semester At Sea cruise, and blogged about why she asked me to pack her bags and send her on her way with only a duffel bag.

Here is how to pack a carry-on bag for your travels.

I used this method for my daughter who unsuccessfully tried using the rolling technique, to get all of this….

For my 10 day trip to Sacramento Ca., I took the following:

two dresses
white jeans
Blue denim Bermuda shorts
white shorts
orange/white top
blue/white top
2 blue tops
multi-color top
T-Shirt for hanging out
1 blue and white infinity scarf that can be worn as a shawl or draped scarf
1 pair sneakers for the gym
blue and white sandals
orange sandals
flip-flops for pool and to be my slippers
I also brought along one bathing suit, 2 exercise tops, pair of socks and one capri legging as well as PJ’s, toiletries and lingerie.

I wore the long dress, blue and white sandals along with the scarf for the plane rides.

I’m Weak, As I Love Buying Shoes and Handbags

shoes and handbags I have a problem, but I am not ashamed; I love shoes and handbags…a lot. I find that they are a simple and quick way to update an outfit in a matter of minutes. Casual to dressy, classic to whimsical, conservative to creative, you name it.

This love affair of mine means I like to buy shoes and handbags…a lot. Not out of control shopping, just taking advantage of sales for the shoes and handbags that will work with the clothes I own and replace the ones that are worn out, uncomfortable, or no longer get worn.

shoes and handbags

I  took the above four 4 pairs of sandals  out of my closet, as I no longer wear them. One pair will be donated to the local Community Center, and the other three will be consigned come next April. They can be consigned because they are in great condition and have been stored properly in my closet.  There is money to be found in your closet, or at the very least clothes that would be greatly appreciated by those who are in need.

Handbag

I only bought 2 pairs of sandals that I love, are comfortable and were a great deal. My new sandals will get worn very often, and now I have extra room in my closet along with more outfits to create

using my new shoes.

Tip: If you avoid changing handbags because it is time consuming, try using an insert like I do for my handbags.  Then  you will be able to  switch one out for another in less than 20 seconds.

So what are you holding onto in your closet and WHY?

Why Do Some Women Walk Like This?

I just do not understand why some women in high heels choose to wear shoes that cause them to wobble while they walk. A wiggle can be sexy, but a wobble is not.

A young woman walking in front of me when I was in Colorado, and I couldn’t help but notice how her walk distracted from how nicely she was dressed. She is wearing shoes that are too high for her and her ankle is twisting and turning so much, that she will likely become the patient of the local Orthopedist.

Here, below, is another example of the heights some designers go to when dressing their models for fashion shows. Clearly not understanding how to separate art from reality is evident, and admittedly very funny, in the video below. Note: And nobody got hurt!

Even flatter shoes can cause injuries if your ankle twists when not given enough support, so please consider how you walk and look in a pair of shoes before you too may end up in a blooper video.

What do you think about high heels? Please share your thoughts in the comments box below. I would love to hear for YOU!

Love getting emails like this: I’m loving the new wardrobe that you helped me acquire!  So many people have commented on my look, even asking how I lost all the weight!”

Ever Have Back Cleavage? Advice for Women Over 40

Lately, I’m all about the back. Ever since I tried on a dress that was a tiny bit snug, and turned around to see what my daughter was laughing at. There in the mirror was my reflection of what looked like some mighty fine breast implants, but they were on the wrong side of my body. I had back cleavage and laughed along with my daughter who at that point, was practically rolling on the floor.

I regret to this day that I did not photograph my impressive back monstrosities and I am convinced that my front cleavage was quite jealous of the competition behind her.

Now it’s time to learn what to do: Remember that back fat is common, but can be contained and or minimized when following these tips:

1. Go up one size if you get back cleavage in a dress, bathing suit, or exercise top.

2.  Shorten the straps and take in any spot that needs to be adjusted for a perfect fit.

3.  If you are broad-shouldered, have back fat, or both, then only wear wide straps and avoid racerback styles at all costs. They are very good at creating quite disturbing-looking back cleavage.

4. Get a professional bra fitting. The wrong size or ill-fitting bra, can create oodles of puddles and accentuate or create back cleavage and back fat.

5.  Always look at what is happening behind you and have a sense of humor about all the directions our bodies can go into when wearing the wrong clothes and lingerie. It is NEVER the fault of your shape, but rather the wrong clothes for your body.

😳😳THIS IS NOT ME!!!!!!😳😳

How To Pick The Best Bathing Suit for Women Over 40

Here’s how to pick the best bathing suit to get you out by the pool or beach.

How To Pick The Best Bathing Suit

Congratulations! You are finally taking a relaxing vacation to a sunny tropical spot. All you need to pack are a few shorts or pants a couple of tops and a bathing suit.

Cue the music for “Jaws” when the young woman is swimming in the ocean, as the thought of finding and wearing a bathing suit may cause equal amounts of dread and fear, as well as some blood-curdling screams.

Relax a while and let me give you a few tips on how to pick the best bathing suit for you and get you back in the water, or at least be able to lie down on a lounge chair. I want you to enjoy your time in the sun in style and comfort.

Seven Tips on How To Pick The Best Bathing Suit:

  1. Do not try on suits that are the same size as your clothes. Please don’t ask me why, but swimwear sizes do not correspond with clothing sizes.  Women need to try one to two sizes up for a flattering and comfortable fit.
  1. Choose a suit in a color that compliments you. And FYI: Avoid white, especially if you plan on getting wet.  White suits will always become see-through.
  1. Highlight your smaller parts with lighter colors and camouflage your somewhat larger parts with darker colors. I use this trick to minimize what I consume at the all you can eat at buffet tables and the few too many Pina Coladas.

    See Photos above

  1. Watch your back. No, really take a look and see if the shape of your back is pushing over the edge of your bathing suit. If it is, go for a style with a higher back so more of you is held in.
  1. Of course, you wish you had a smaller waistline, so look for suits that have shirring in the middle. The fabric gathering is a great way to disguise muffin tops and tummy poufs.
  1. Tuck, lift, and suck. Tuck, lift, and suck.  Repeat this mantra each time you put on your suit. Tuck in your breasts, lift up your rear so it is in the bathing suit versus hanging out around the edges, and suck in your stomach when you walk to or get up from your lounge chair.
  1. Never underestimate or abuse the power of the cover-up. A simple lightweight tank dress or oversized shirt is far more flattering than shorts and a t-shirt and fits so well with pool or beach surroundings.

An Afterthought:

If the mere idea of wearing a bathing suit still causes you flashes of terror, I have heard Alaska is a lovely place to visit.

Fall Fashion Trends To Follow For Women Over 40

fall fashion

So while we have the air conditioning on, drinking lots of water, iced tea and coffee, the magazines have started rolling out the fall fashion trends for us to follow.

In the July 2014 issue of Marie Claire magazine, their fall fashion trends are shown in their feature, titled: Legends Of The Fall.

Perhaps my perspiration got into my eyes, as I was having a hard time believing what I was seeing. Nope, , unfortunately I was seeing the spread of the fall fashion trends just fine.

I’m thinking a more appropriate title would be Oh That Ain’t Happening For The Fall.

Come on, not even the models look nice in these outfits. The first outfit reminds me of what Saturday Night Live would come up with for a female Pimp, and aother looks like she is wearing a week’s worth of road kill.

I’m sorry to be so forthcoming, but am I wrong?

fall fashion

The Fall Fashion Trends are created for you to feel you must go shopping. Sadly very often, they make a woman who should get some new clothes stay away from the stores. I would know.

fall fashion“Scarlett entered my life at just the right time. I’ve always said, “In my next life, I want someone to pack for me when I go   go on a trip.”  Scarlett came to my apartment and not only weeded out my closet of clothes that should have been donated years ago, she also pulled together outfits – not too many and not too few — for an upcoming conference.  Most of all, we laughed and had a lot of fun in the process.  She has the “eye” and the talent.  I can’t thank her enough.”
