All Aboard: The Importance of Career Advice and Personal Image

career advice
Scarlett presenting at Job Central for The Ladders.

I am so glad my schedule opened up so that I could accept the invitation to speak at Job Central presented by The Ladders in the fabulous Grand Central Station in NYC.

Grand Central and the surrounding streets were filled with job seekers looking for advice, connections and of course jobs. There were plenty of recruiters there as well, hoping to find the right candidates for their organizations.

I enjoyed listening to another presenter, and author, Dr. Woody who offers career advice for today’s challenging economy and job market. He was encouraging his audience to network more and not be afraid of going up to someone you don’t know and striking up a conversation that could very possibly lead to a job, referral or more business.

I totally agree, and would add that by dressing in a flattering manner along with some great accessories, an important business connection might actually go up to you first!

My career advice presentation, titled Looking Your Best for Business Success, focused on the importance of personal image and how & why it makes such a big difference in a person’s career. I gave 6 tips that were simple to follow and easy to implement so that a person’s wardrobe will work for them and not against them.

A job seeker, entrepreneur, or a professional should allow their personal image to promote their talents, company, and profession and not distract them. If you don’t like how you look and feel in your clothes, you will be wasting your time and energy on being unhappy and insecure about your appearance instead of focusing on what you have to offer.

Each person who I saw and met with at Job Central had something to offer and was at the right place to get valuable career tips and connections.

“What a great decision I made to begin working with Scarlett on updating my wardrobe! My clothing pieces were very random, sometimes dated, and not always fitting me well. For the first appointment, Scarlett came to my home and performed a color analysis to determine what color palette would be best with my hair and skin tone. Next we went through all of my clothes, shoes, and outerwear, and decided what to keep, donate, and toss. Scarlett took many notes and some photos, so she would know what I would need to purchase on our shopping trip. The next session was spent shopping and trying on new pieces to fill in my wardrobe. The saleswoman that Scarlett works with at Nordstrom made this a pleasure for both of us. Before working with wardrobe stylist Scarlett, my appearance was somewhat boring and dull. Now my closet is filled with a colorful selection of professional, polished, well fitting, and age appropriate clothing. The value I received from her services is immeasurable because of the confidence and happiness that I have now, when I get dressed in the morning!”

Professional Image Counts for Getting The Job of Your Dreams

Professional ImageProfessional Image Counts for Getting The Job of Your Dreams

I am delighted to introduce you to my first guest blogger, Stephanie Goetsch, and know that you would want to share her excellent advice on professional image with those you know who are interviewing for jobs and/or the college grads who will be heading off into the job search market.

Ace the Interview with Image 101

“Finding a better job” is among the Top 10 most made New Year’s Resolutions. If you’ll be ringing in the New Year determined to find the career of your dreams then this is for you.
There’s so much more to landing your dream job than simply sending off your resume – like acing the interview. Did you know image is as much a part of your interview success as your answers? Oh yeah, it is.
Interview Image 101 all begins with company culture. Let me explain…
You’ve done your homework to prepare for the interview and now the big day is here. First thing you need to do: get dressed. But it’s not quite as simple as it sounds. Let’s take a look at Interview Image 101: Business Do’s & Don’ts.

Image rules exist not to stifle your personal style, or make you a corporate drone, but to ensure nothing distracts from your message – your qualifications are the star of this show. What you choose to wear to your interview must complement your message and importantly show your future employer you “get them,” their culture and mission.

What you wear to the interview shows whether or not you ‘get’ the company culture and if you’ll be an employee fit.

This may come as a shock, but the classic business black suit is not always appropriate. Your image, what you wear, should reflect the company culture of your future employer, thereby sending the message you “get it.” If you are interviewing for a position on Wall Street, or with a major consulting firm, bank, or other conservative employer, go with a complementary conservative look (think a pressed black or navy blue suit). On the other hand, if you’re interviewing with a grassroots non-profit, your image should convey a polished but “down to earth” message (think clean and crisp khakis, blazer and collared shirt).

Can’t decide the right look? Consider how the CEO of your dream employer would dress and mimic his/her look. It’s always good to aim high!

Professional ImageScarlett’s insight & knowledge of color choices, jewelry shapes and neckline styles has helped me create a successful system for my wardrobe. Her approachability & understanding of my concerns was key for my choosing her to be my stylist. From conference rooms & classes to client consultations, I now have more confidence & “curb appeal!” Thank you Scarlett!

4 Tips To Shop Sales and Save Money Shopping For Clothes

4 Tips To Shop Sales and Save Money Shopping For Clothes

4 Tips To Shop Sales and Save Money Shopping For Clothes.

As much as I love taking advantage of ALL the sales, it can be a very expensive way to save money if one doesn’t buy the right things. A bargain purchase is only a bargain when you actually need and can use the item. It helps to know how to shop sales and what you should not buy no matter its cost.

That $100 top for only $40 plus an extra 20% is so enticing, but if it is in the wrong color, size and/or style, it will sit in your closet unworn and worst of all, unloved. Don’t let this tragedy happen to your purchases.

I have gotten some incredible deals and will keep taking advantage of the sales, for myself and my clients because that is one of my favorite ways of building a wardrobe without spending a fortune. After all, the first word I taught my daughter to read was SALE!

4 Tips To Shop Sales and Save Money Shopping For Clothes:

1.  When you see that a store you like is starting a sale, go to their website where you will have a bigger selection than what one individual store has in their inventory. This is especially helpful for smaller stores like J.McLauughlin, The Gap, etc.

2.  Shop thru Ebates, where not only will you get to shop online but will also receive cash back for your purchases, in the form of a check every 3 months. I have gotten back over $430 since I joined Ebates, which naturally I spent on sales.

3.  Don’t avoid higher-end stores like Neiman Marcus. For about the same cost, you can get higher quality merchandise during their sales, than the lower quality you might be buying at regular prices.

4. Last, but not least, only buy the clothes and accessories that look good on you. Not what is in style, a great deal or the salesperson tells you looks marvelous on you and is their best seller.

If you want to know what to buy and wear and stop wasting your money you can contact me and I will tell you what will make choosing what to wear fun, easy and oh so flattering.

Are You Getting Older While Getting Younger?

getting older

So how lucky are we to be getting older while clearly getting younger at the same time?

Just look at Aunt Bee from The Andy Griffiths TV show, played by Frances Bavier, compared to Christie Brinkley.

Now get this: Both women are close to 60 years old in these photos but look more like mother and daughter than birthday milestone partners.

Women, and men as well, no longer sit back and accept looking older as the way it must be. We cover up those grey hairs, shape our brows, lift those breasts, whiten our teeth, wear our hair down, avoid the pearl necklaces which can emphasize the rings around our necks, use better skincare, avoid the sun, exercise, try to eat healthy, and lastly no longer dress like our mothers and grandmothers.

Yup, I’m happy to be getting younger while getting older too!

Because You’re Worth It!

L’Oreal had it right when they started reminding women back in 1973 that they were worthy of taking good care of themselves. Here is a L’Oreal, because you’re worth it, commercial with the beautiful Kerry Washington, before her days on one of my favorite TV shows, Scandal.

Because you’re worth it advertising campaign  commercial.

So if women are worth it, why do so many do and give more to their family, friends, and even their pets, than they give to themselves?

Has anything like this happened to you?

Your daughter or granddaughter wants you to buy her bras and panties at Victoria Secret, and you are buying yours at Kohls or Target? Of course, this is assuming you have even bothered buying yourself new lingerie within the past 5 years!

Or

She wants exercise clothes from the, watch out if your thighs are too big, and expensive Lululemon, while you have been wearing the same leggings and T-Shirts for years. Even worse, you might actually work out, while the youngster is just looking to strut her stuff, which is perfect by the way without a single squat or sit-up. Oh the injustice….. but I digress.

Recently a client told me she had her wakeup call, when she realized her barely a teenager daughter had better workout clothes than she did, and I was the woman many years ago when after having spent a fortune at Victoria Secret for my ‘budding’ daughter, realized that the scales of self-care were tipping in the wrong direction. Something inside of me snapped, and I marched myself into a lingerie boutique to treat myself to higher quality and better fitting bras simply because I am worth it! I have never stopped taking care of me since then.

There’s a problem with doing more for others than for ourselves. We are unwittingly making ourselves unhappy by lowering our self-esteem and self-confidence.

It is not selfish to acknowledge you are worth the trouble or expense of self-care. On the contrary it is smart and helpful as you are teaching your children and spouses that you are important and not insignificant.

If you find often denying yourself a decent haircut, coloring,  manicure, a well fitting bra, new clothes or even a vacation so you can give more to others, then you are actually giving less since you are diminishing yourself. When we become smaller we have less to give from our hearts and that is really the only place we have so much to give and share.

You Still Got It!

I strongly believe that every woman is worth it, and if you feel the same way please contact me
to schedule your 15 minute You Still Got It, Free Consultation.

“I want other women to experience your magic.
Scarlett is AMAZING!! I can’t believe I waited this long to find someone like her. I don’t like shopping, and SHE DOES and she has the best eye. Before working with her, I was in old, tired, out of date wear. Now I look and feel terrific. Somehow she finds the PERFECT clothes at an INCREDIBLE price. I can’t wait to have her line up my fall fashions. Thanks Scarlett! Everyone’s raving about my look now!”

A Woman To Admire and Follow – Jane Pollak

Jane Pollak

Full disclosure, Jane Pollak has been a client of mine for about twelve years, but I was a follower of hers before we ever met.

Click here to see and hear what Jane Pollak has to say about me.

I heard Jane Pollak speak via a teleconference to professional image consultants, back in 2006, and was incredibly impressed with her tips for women entrepreneurs. I then went to hear her speak, bought her book, and introduced myself. Jane liked what I was wearing and the rest is, as they say, history.

Jane Pollak’s, Soul Proprietor: 101 Lessons from a Lifestyle Entrepreneur has taught me so much about how to run my business. Since I always look for more ideas to better serve my clients, a few years  I  just signed up for her The Soul Proprietor Coaching Program.

Jane Pollak has a tagline that I just love: Leading Remarkable Women To Uncommon Success. It is a joy for me to be Jane’s wardrobe stylist, so she looks as remarkable as the women she has coached.

“I hired Scarlett at first to do my colors with our 341 Team, it was a really nice afternoon to share with the girls, we learned a lot about what not to wear. After that I hired her to come to my house, edit and organize my clothes and then we went to work, shopping. It really changed my life. She took the stress out of dressing for me. I can get ready for a meeting in 10 minutes now without thinking. I feel better about myself and more confident meeting with clients. In addition, I spend half as much money on clothing. We now go once a year, to fill in the gaps with some basic pieces or just to keep up with the fashion. Kind of like a tune up. I don’t feel the need to shop at all other times. I keep my closet clean and have half the clothes I used to but I wear all of them now.”Jane Pollak —Felicia Rubinstein

What To Wear: Listen To My Radio Interview and Find Out

Erica Laudon, the founder of  ModernWeddingMom.com interviewed me on her radio show, and asked me to share my wardrobe styling and image advice with her listeners.

Not only am I professionally trained, I also have always had the ability to use my personal creativity to put together outfits that are unique to each woman. This factor helps her stand out in a positive manner. I listen to what my client needs, what she likes and what her lifestyle is and I find a way to allow her to still be who she is, but dressed in better fitting and flattering clothes. I am not about the latest fashion trends, as that does not take each woman’s unique physical and personality traits into account. Instead, I focus on creating a unique, personal style for my clients that they will love.

I revealed quite a few of the tips I share with my clients, and how contrary to popular belief, expensive clothes are no better than less expensive because……well, you will just have to listen to the interview to find out.

My interview on what to wear in BlogTalkRadio:

Stop The Makeover Madness!

makeoverThere are so many wardrobe styling and fashion experts on TV telling you, complete strangers, what to wear that you don’t really need my advice anymore. Or, do you?

Do you know that when the wardrobe styling personalities on TV make their recommendations as to what the must-haves are for the season, they typically are representing the stores that carry the merchandise they are plugging? Their job is to stimulate sales and not to make sure that you are wearing clothes which show off your best features and hide the ones you like the least.

Just think back to whenever you might have seen the Ambush Makeover segment on the fourth hour of The Today Show with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. Women anxiously wait outside for hours, hoping to be chosen for clothes, hair and makeup makeover. They show up in sweatpants or mom jeans, and walk out with a great hairstyle and makeup, wobbling in high heels often wearing a cocktail dress.

Many times they cannot see how they look in the mirror until they put their eye-glasses back on while struggling to walk in shoes that throw them off balance or possibly cause them nose bleeds due to their footwear imposed high altitudes.

Now I love the new makeup and hairstyles the Ambush Makeover candidates receive, but I am not impressed with their wardrobe makeovers.

Why not style these makeover winners in clothes that they can use for their real-world lives? Perhaps pants that can be dressed up or down along with shoes that are comfortable yet good looking?

By the way, those type of shoes do exist and I always get a thrill out of the reaction of women when they try them on for the first time.

These REAL LIFE before and afters makeovers are of a few of my clients, and notice how not only do they look younger, thinner and taller but also confident, successful and professional.

“Wow, imakeovers that a money-saver!” That’s what my husband said when I showed him photos of the 14 new looks Wardrobe Stylist Scarlett assembled from my clothes. Not only did she create polished, professional looks; she showed me how to use clothes I hardly ever wore. I can wear the same dress for a week and still look different each day. Thank you, Scarlett!
