But, Is It Really On Sale? Shopping Tips

Since I am a personal shopper, who is always looking to save money, I know a deal when I see one and I love to share shopping tips with my clients and subscribers.

I also know when a sale, is anything but a deal.

I love to check out the clothes and shoes in the TJMaxx name brand section, called The Runway. Often TJMaxx has lots of brands that I see when shopping for my clients in stores and online. Occasionally I find a great deal, but mostly enjoy the hunt for hidden treasures in all of the stores’ departments.

Take a look at the price tags on these Giorgio Armani pants, I found on the clearance rack of The Runway department in my local TJMaxx. Do you see what I saw?

Shopping Tips

Shopping Tips

Looks like these $795 pants, marked down to $149.99. What a deal, right?

Now look at the original price tag from the store that had these pants before TJMaxx received them.  That store had reduced them all the way down to $99. And still they didn’t sell? Makes one slightly suspicious, but I digress.

Shopping Tips

Be careful when shopping sales racks, and don’t get taken in by false deals.

shopping tips“I had an upcoming conference with NO time nor desire to shop for a new wardrobe. I called Scarlett after reading her blog for many months and she saved the day. She came, spent a few hours with me going through my closet and helped me create a series of perfect outfits. The best part, at the conference a colleague complimented me and told me what I was wearing was a great look. Funny thing was, I had everything in my closet all along but had never added the boots, scarf and earrings”. –Cathi Nelson President l APPO

“Thank you for helping me get on track.  I was so overwhelmed by what I had in my closet, but now I feel better about going into my closet and getting rid of what doesn’t fit right. I am grateful for the time you spent with me and look forward to having you back, to go over my fall/winter wardrobe. I knew I wanted to make a change; I just needed a wardrobe stylist to help me. It was perfect timing that you presented at the Somers Library when you did.
Someone up there must of been listening to me and sent you into my life.”
Thank you again Scarlett.” Terri Gorman

Does My Butt Look Fat?

Your stylist gives jean shopping tips that will make you want to run out to try on a pair of these jeans.

I worked very hard with my research and development department, AKA me, to find you a pair of jeans that are comfortable, flattering, and stylish.

These pull-on, yes I actually am recommending button and zipper-free jeans, are now my favorite, skinny leg jeans.

They look like regular jeans, have real pockets and go on like a legging, and only you have to know.

Shhh.

I get the look of a skinny jean, without the struggle of getting them past my hips.

Besides every day, I plan on wearing these for my upcoming flight to California. I like to be able to move easily when traveling, and not look like I am wearing PJ’s on my Red Eye flight when returning home. Yeah, I’ve seen women wearing outfits on planes that are only lacking a teddy bear to snuggle with.

You can purchase these Levis pull on, tummy slimming, skinny/legging jeans at Kohls or Macy’s. I’m wearing the dark wash jeans, as I personally like how dark colors make things, my tummy and butt, somewhat recede.

Kohls Reg. $54.00
‘Special’ $39.99

Macy’s Reg. $54.00
Was $44.99
Sale $39.99

Use your coupons for either store, as paying less is always best.

Happy Mother’s Day Stylist shows women what to wear

“I discovered Scarlett through a mutual friend whose ensemble was stunning. I had to ask “who” she was wearing. She passed me Scarlett’s name, and what I got from our engagement was so much more than a few beautiful dress recommendations. She empowered me with the knowledge of the right colors and silhouettes for my coloring and shape. I’ve received piles of compliments on the items we both chose using her guidance. She gave me a tool I will have for the rest of my life. Working with Scarlett is an investment not only in your closet, but your confidence as well!” http://www.leapica.com/

“Thank you for all the photos of the outfits you created for me using my existing clothes. Every outfit I wore last week was one that you put together, and I really appreciate it. It’s like having a closet full of new clothes. I love picking out what to wear, simply by looking at the pictures and having everything together, even the jewelry. Thank you!” – Nancy Aker
“To be truthful, I wasn’t sure I needed Scarlett’s services, but I knew that I wanted to recommend her to my clients and before I did that I had to try it myself first. I was wrong. I didn’t realize the value of having someone take the time to go through my wardrobe, point out the good, bad and yes some ugly. The really fun part was creating brand new outfits from the clothes I already owned. Scarlett was patient, funny and while I was flinging clothes around the bedroom she color coded my closet so everything was SO easy to find. We also matched each outfit to jewelry that I had that had been sitting idol. Just by changing the jewelry it gave each outfit a brand new feel. Most importantly Scarlett was helping me fit my clothes to my personality and step away from what I thought I should be wearing. Sometimes you don’t know the value of something until you have tried it and this definitely fits that category for me!”  Debra Shimer Desire On Fire
“I’m the first one to tell people, when they compliment me on how I look, that I have a secret weapon: Wardrobe Stylist ScarlettStylist shows women what to wear Debease. I’ve worked with Scarlett for years now and recommend her heartily to family, friends and colleagues. She not only shops with me for beautiful pieces to add to my wardrobe, but she also comes to my home and coordinates the new purchases with the rest of my wardrobe, then photographs the outfits to create my own personal look-book. I NEVER have to think, “What will I wear today?” I simply consult my look-book and get dressed. I know I’ve saved time and money using Scarlett’s invaluable service.”  Leading Remarkable Women To Uncommon Success  Jane Pollak,CPCC – Certified Professional Co-Active Coach & Author.

To Grey Or Not To Grey?

This was one of my first videos, created a few years ago to show you that going grey is not for everyone. Especially, me.

Look how naturally beautiful and free, these women are. No more hair coloring, root touch ups, or hats needed even if you are a celebrity.

Should women color their grey hair Should women color their grey hair Should women color their grey hair Should women color their grey hair Should women color their grey hair

I often advise a client to go all grey, when appropriate, however many women color their hair and won’t be stopping anytime soon. In the above video, I recommend Batiste Dry Shampoo to cover up grey hairs and stretch out the time between shampoos, so the coloring will last longer.

As for the rest of us, only our hairdresser knows for sure.

This Made Me Really Mad and Sad

professional wardrobe tips for women
Does a Woman Have to Dress Down to Move Up In Her Career?

Recently, one of my younger clients who work in a male-dominated field, emailed me with the following question:

“I wonder if you would post about a specific topic for executive women. I have worn the dresses you picked out for me with much success, but almost too much success. I look so good it’s detracting from my message and attracting some unwanted attention from men.”

To say that I was taken aback by her request would be an understatement, as I truly thought those threatening days were long gone.

I experienced her quandary back in the 80s when I was a hard-working and ambitious woman, surrounded by men with huge egos who had no fear of sexual harassment charges or even knew they existed. Actually, I had bosses and encounters with men who thought nothing of inappropriate behavior. In a way, it was their badge of honor and my baggage to carry. So, how could this still be going on?

My client, and apparently other women in male-dominated industries, as per an article in Forbes, on the subject for sexism, clearly shows that the good ‘ole boys club shenanigans that I’ve had to face, still go on, especially in Silicon Valley.

So here I am, three decades later, showing women which clothes will flatter them the most, so that their careers can soar, only to find out that unwanted and uninvited attention from men is clipping their wings.

The majority of women I work with are not in male-dominated fields and do not have to forfeit looking and feeling attractive, in order to show power and receive respect. Yet, I can’t stop being disturbed about how women in tech industries have to wrestle with deciding if they have to dress down so as to move up in their careers.

I asked my client if she is getting more deals and interest in her services, since working with me and wearing the clothes I selected for her professional wardrobe. Here is her response:

“Yes, a lot of doors opened and the deal flows are better, however, I think I’m pitching a deal and the men think they are getting a date.”

Could it be that when some men behave like predators, it is their attempt to keep powerful, smart and talented women from passing them on the way up the ladder of a successful career? Or are they simply afraid of what their prey could accomplish if they are allowed to survive?

It is wonderful that she, and many of my other client’s, careers and income are expanding, yet tainted with the fact that even in this day and age, women in certain industries still have to decide if they should dress like a man by wearing a suit, or dress so that they feel beautiful, while risking being made to feel that they are sending the wrong signals.

How disappointing and sad, that many women still have to say ”eyes up here.”

A woman can and should be able to wear clothes that are flattering and give her the ability to command the room, instead of the wrong attention. Her career will always grow when her appearance reflects her confidence, skills, and creativity.

Clearly, our work in leveling the playing field in the workplace is still not done, but in no way does that mean women should allow the “uber” testosterone of some small-minded men, to determine how they dress and feel about themselves.

I would love to hear about your past or current experiences regarding men and how it did or did not affect your choices on what to wear to work. Please comment in the box below.

professional wardrobe tips for women“As a client of Scarlett’s, I’ve been lucky enough to take advantage of her online shopping service. Once I let her know what I was looking for, she took off, quickly sending me a long list of links to specific clothing that she knew I’d like, along with comments on sizing and her opinion. I wound up with all the pieces I needed, plus a few I didn’t even think about, but loved when I got them. Scarlett makes it easy, stress-free and super-convenient. Stop Digging In Your Heels!

Save your shoes!!!shoes for outdoor wedding

When warmer weather arrives, so do outdoor events.

Weddings, garden parties, graduation ceremonies, and any other event that is being held outside presents a problem for a woman: What shoes can she wear that won’t dig into the grass and ruin her heels?

While shopping with a client and her future daughter-in-law, for the perfect dress (we found two) to wear to her son’s wedding, we headed to the shoe department. She needed shoes for outdoor wedding.

I wanted to find her a pair of shoes that will be comfortable, attractive and could be worn for other occasions as well. And I did.

But that wasn’t what I wanted to share with you.

Her adorable and absolutely lovely daughter-in-law to be discovered a heel protector in Nordstrom’s shoe department. I think it is a brilliant solution to the damage that can occur to shoes when your heels sink into the lawn.

What Is The Cost Of Trying To Look Young?

trying to look young

Trying to look young by dressing in younger styles, never works in a woman’s favor.

I know a woman who has an incredible body, and a beautiful face. She can, and does wear clothes from the Junior department. She loves dressing like she did 30 to 40 years ago. She feels younger and more attractive that way.

The other day she was asked if she wanted to take advantage of the senior citizen’s discount on her purchase. She is 10 years away from being eligible.
Yikes!

When a woman tries to look younger by dressing the way younger women dress, she ends up looking older.

Don’t make that expensive mistake, as self-esteem and confidence are priceless.

I wrote more about this dilemma that some women find themselves in, and how to solve it here.
