What To Wear As Mother Of The Bride Or Groom
When one of my clients has the joy of her son or daughter getting married, she calls me for ideas on what to wear as the mother of the Bride or Groom, and the first thing I tell them is not to wear black.
Ok, I know what you’re thinking…but Scarlett wore black.
Okay, I confess I did and that I’m somewhat ashamed, but please hear me out before you shake your finger at me or roll your eyes.
When you read to the end, you’ll find out the true reason I wore black.
I tried on at least 15 dresses in two different stores and in all sorts of colors and shapes. None fit me in a flattering way that also didn’t require weight loss or undergarments that I couldn’t get into without a team and likely some sort of pulley system.
Now when I take a client shopping, typically one of the first 3 if not the first dress is the winner for her, but that did not happen for me.
But when I put this dress on from a store called Elephants Trunk in Mt. Kisco NY, I knew I found ‘the one’ for me.
Still, I knew I wanted to make some changes so as to make the dress my own and have the look and style I wanted for myself.
The Elephants Trunk allowed me to customize the dress and along with their very talented seamstress, here is what I requested:
Bye, bye, frumpy sleeves!
I didn’t want the sleeves to be the same fabric as the main part of the dress as to me that looked frumpy.
As per my request, I wanted them to be made out of the lacey and slightly sparkly fabric.
But that wasn’t enough for me! I wanted a flowing back and the seamstress and salespeople on the floor looked at me like I was nuts!
To be honest, when I was in weeks before, the owner thought my idea was great.
Below is the back before the requested flowing fabric was added.
Below is the dress with the fabric pinned onto the back and once they saw my idea actually on, they loved my idea.
If you know me, you know I love clothes that have movement.
And here I am with my son on the day of my daughter’s wedding, and let me tell you it was a GREAT day and night.
PS. The dress did come in other colors, but because this dress was made from two different fabrics the colors did not totally match and that is
the only reason why I ended up wearing black.
