How To Avoid A Wardrobe Malfunction

How To Avoid A Wardrobe Malfunction

The best stories come from either my clients or the women who want to work with me.

I’ll share one with you a few sentences from here, but first…

We’ve all had the experience of something in our outfit either busting open or barely
fitting properly, and one way to avoid wearing an outfit that will make you very uncomfortable is to sit it out.

Yup, I mean sit down.

I encourage you to sit down when you put an outfit on or try on a new piece of clothing.

If…

  • You feel constricted, hear a strain, or a pop, don’t wear it, and definitely don’t buy it.
  • It is uncomfortable, don’t wear it, and definitely don’t buy it.
  • You tell yourself you’ll lose weight first, don’t wear it, and definitely don’t buy it.
  • You can’t sit down without feeling miserable or potentially embarrassed,
don’t wear it, and definitely don’t buy it.

So, here’s the story from a woman I spoke to this week, who wants my help getting her
closet filled with outfits that will fit, and flatter her.

All she simply wants and will get, are clothes that she can’t wait to wear. Sound familiar?

She wants to replace the mistakes hanging in her closet and showed me one of
her expensive examples.

It was a very pretty 3-piece pant set that a salesperson talked her into buying
for her daughter’s wedding a couple of years ago.

The jacket and pants were nice, but the sleeveless tank was much shorter than what I would have picked out for her. It simply wasn’t long enough to fully cover her stomach.

The tailor she took the outfit too, offered a solution. He would add snaps to connect the tank to her pants. 🤔

That looked great when she was standing, but at the wedding and reception, she was seated.

So what do you think happened when she sat?

Yes, you guessed it…SNAP, SNAP, SNAP!

But, if she had done the sit test, or, even better, had known me back a few years, she would never

have been so self-conscious and uncomfortable on such an important day in her and her daughter’s life.

Take a seat when trying on outfits, and you will know how to avoid a wardrobe malfunction that will ruin your day or night.

I’ve never heard of attaching snaps from a top to a pair of pants, and for good reason. It’s a VERY bad idea.

PS. If you find yourself standing in your PJs each morning, staring into your closet hoping that today’s the day you’ll find an outfit that fits you perfectly…stay tuned for a new and quick way to have a closet full of clothes that makes you confidently happy and stylish!

Are You Able To Strike A Power Pose?

Strike A Power Pose
Strike A Power Pose

Have you heard about the power of a power pose?

In addition to what a woman says, her non-verbal body language, often speaks louder than her words and it also changes how we you see yourself.

What we say to ourself matters, and way too often we don’t talk nicely  to ourselves.

So, STOP it!

Time to, as Madonna once sang: Strike A Pose…Strike A Power Pose.

When you put your hands on your hips, in the now named wonder Woman Pose, you send messages to your brain and to other that you have confidence, power and strength.

You’ll get respect and self confidence, and the proof about how body language affects how others see us, can be seen in the TedTalk: Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are by social psychologist Amy Cuddy in her 2012. She shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.

Her Ted Talk is getting close to 36 million views!!!

But, Horrors, Power Posing Can’t Work For Some Women, If:

  • Clothes don’t fit well, as her hands will be busy pulling and tugging at herself.
  • Her shoes hurt…OUCH.
  • She hates how she looks in her clothes.
  • Keeps wearing the same outfit, over, and over, and over, and get the picture?
  • Lacks the skills to take steps to increase self-confidence.

How you hold and pose your body, transforms the message you are sending to the room and to your inner confidence.

In her talk, Amy Cuddy states that “Tiny Tweaks Can Make Big Changes”.

I would like to tweak her statement and ask:

What’s stopping you from tweaking your wardrobe?

I’m really, really good at tweaking, not to be confused with twerking, which I cannot and will not do.

Virtually or personally, I’m here to help you to stylishly strike a power pose and represent your business and career the way you should be seen and heard.

So go ahead, no-one is looking: go Strike A Power Pose.

Strike A Power Pose

Before I worked with Scarlett I had a closet full of clothes and no idea how to put them together. After just a few hours of working with me in my home, my closet was organized, all the clothes that didn’t work were gone and I had lots of outfits pulled together, that make me feel great when I walk out the door. She went though my bags, my jewelry and without me buying one new thing I feel, based on all the compliments I get, like a million bucks. Belinda Wasser

Here’s How To Get Rid Of Hanger Bumps.

Don’t you hate how some clothes look like they have bumps in them and stick up and out on your shoulders?

Follow these tips to rid yourself of hanger bumps.

How To Get Rid Of Hanger Bumps

Going thru the clothes in your closet, you might some of your clothes a bit lumpy on the shoulders if they were not hung properly.

These shoulder shapers will also be great for your coats and jackets, which sadly we will all be wearing soon…too soon, and hopefully without hanger bumps.

Are You Also Fed Up With Body Shaming?

 body shaming
Body Shaming is wrong!

I never knew how much Jennifer Aniston and I had in common.

Oh, not that the paparazzi follow me around and endlessly comment on my looks, or because I am a celebrity and the world just can’t get enough of me.

But how we both are fed up with the unrealistic, unfair, and unkind judgments women are subjected to over and over again. We share the belief that Body Shaming has got to stop, and speaking up is one way to make that happen.

Women are constantly getting the message from magazine and TV celebrity profiles, that anything resembling a ‘normal’ body shape should be labeled as fat or pregnant.

Yeah, people, we ladies have tummies, fatty deposits all over our bodies, and skin not as tight as it once was, which in all honesty is NORMAL!

I love what Jennifer Aniston wrote for the Huffington Post:

“For the record, I am not pregnant,”.  “What I am is fed up.”

“I resent being made to feel ‘less than’ because my body is changing and/or I had a burger for lunch and was photographed from a weird angle and therefore deemed one of two things: ‘pregnant’ or ‘fat,’ ” she continued to write.

So let me tell you how I really do have something in common with the rightfully fed-up actress.

When I was in my 20’s, I booked a massage as a treat, after a long and grueling 3 day business retreat.

Keeping in mind that I weighed about 20 pounds less than I do now, my body shape was pretty darn close to Jennifer Aniston’s.

Upon entering the spa, my masseuse asked me, “Do you know if you are having a boy or a girl?”

Once I collected myself, I responded with “I’m having a burger with fries.”

Body Shaming

See, I told you Jennifer Anniston and I had a lot in common.

FYI We also both attended The Performing Arts High School, as in the 1980 film Fame, just not at the same time. Her acting career went just a bit further than mine.

“Scarlett has provided me with a completely new vision for how I dress. After working with her remotely, I was armed with the knowledge I needed to let go of clothes and accessories that didn’t serve (or flatter) me any longer. I have transformed from the person who walks out of stores empty handed or worse with the wrong silhouettes and colors purchased, into someone who has a clear vision for what works and what I need to pull together outfits. More Ways To Cover Up Your Upper Arms

Check out these arm cover ups in the online newsletter, which I am a contributor to, The Three Tomatoes. They use fabulous Helen Mirren as a perfect example of how a woman maintains a high level of class and glamour, yet always has her upper arms covered.

I even made a video a couple of years ago on the subject of our, less than pageant ready, upper arms.

More Ways To Cover Up Your Upper Arms

It’s not you – it’s your clothes…because you never learned the specifics that will allow you to transform what you choose to wear and  buy.

Stress no more, because now you can get what to wear advice that you can easily follow, while laughing as you learn in my recently published book, Stop Stressing About Dressing. Get your copy here on Amazon.

I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read on how to look and feel great every day. I’m a protege of Scarlett’s and find her tips and explanations invaluable in this slim volume. “That’s why I should wear more ruffles!” is one small reminder of why particular textures, colors and necklines flatter some and not others. Scarlett is a genius in this arena and generously shares her fashion secrets with us mere mortals. I highly recommend Stop Stressing About Dressing to all women, particularly those of us over 50. Are You Mustard Or Ketchup?

what to wear advice for women

There they go again, telling us what colors we must wear to look ‘in style’ for the next season.

The color Guru Pantone has named Oak Bluff as one of the must wear colors for fall.what to wear advice for women

Looks like mustard to me, and I must add that it is an extremely difficult color to wear near the face for most women, especially brunettes.

So if you must add mustard, oh I mean Oak Bluff to your wardrobe, please do so from the waist down. I just can’t give what to wear advice for women, without also giving what not to wear suggestions.

Me, and I’m not bluffing, will be sticking with ketchup…oops, I mean red. Why? Well, red is a color that works for me, and won’t make me look like a condiment.

what to wear advice for women“For eight years, I worked as a freelancer, and dressed either for at-home comfort or for events. Now I was embarking on a corporate job that required a new wardrobe. Or so I thought. Scarlett put together my existing separates into creative, stylish looks; she helped me donate the pieces and suits that were a là mode when I last worked in an office, and identified colors, looks and pieces to fit my figure and fill in the gaps.” Jennifer M.
